Just been to see this car .....

www.pistonheads.com/sales/72618.htm

Dealer is a modern day Arfur Daily !!!

Car looks nice, interior is not as red as in the pictures. However on closer inspection the car haas been poorly repaired on the O/S rear, the rear light cluster hardly fits into the car. Eveidence of filler and poor sanding and spray work all round ths area. The metal above the engine lid is buckled.
Bonnet is very poorly fitting and also a different shade of black, front PU is poorly secured onto the car and all the rubber beading is lifting.
Wheels are not original, Oz replacements.

Walked away. Apparently the car originally came from RSJ not long ago for over £25k.

Just wanted to let you all know to save someone a wasted trip.

Thats a shame I rather fancied that one, especially that interior and I dont usually get excited about 993's.

I loved that old 993 metallic black (I ordered my 993 Targa with it). It had a lovely bronze tint to it - the new 911 blacks are a bit one dimensional for me. Shame this car is a dog.

Hang on...

It has some poor repair work that could be remedied and it's a 993 C2 for 17k...

17k is very cheap for a 993! A real bargain if you weren't fussy. I'd be more concerned with mechanicals and whether the 68k miles are genuine. If so, I'd say feck the bodywork and buy it

Point taken. It's just that he went all the way to see it, and came away disappointed. I was just comiserating.

I understand that it is a cheap car at £17k. However, if someone has skimmped at reparing the bodywork, which you can see visually, I dread to imagine what the 'underneath' of the car may look like.
I'm always looking for a bargain, but perhaps this is too much of a bargain to be true!

thank god for that as at that price for a 993 the market was just about to fall down !

thinking of selling mine later in the year for a lot more than that.... !!

the problem is here, you see the mileage and the price and expect a good car... it's about £5k under a good car so for the condition the price is about right !!

So you didn't look at the underneath of the car, and were just slagging this car off based on its appearance

Honestly, you may mean well, but what if the car is actually OK underneath? Did you bring a tech with you or get it properly inspected? If it is a dog underneath, run for them there hills (and it may be a dog if the outside is poor), but if not... maybe it's worth a punt at 17k.

There seem to be a lot of 'my opinion is fact' posts on PH these days. And you've been encouraging others to steer clear - you may be depriving them of a bargain if it's OK mechanically.

Domster, This was not my interntion at all. Actually I took along an Porsche enthusiast with many years experience of 911's including bodywork.
His advise to me was to stay away from it, the additional cost of getting the car 'right' on top of the purchase price would be greater than or equal to a good car.

Im not stopping anyone from going to see the car.

Within the rules of the forum and with the approval of the moderators.

Pistonheads is not a free for all - nor is it some outpost for free speech and the ingestion of lentils.

How would you like it if you were selling a car and some bloke slagged it off on a forum, maybe out of proportion - especially when the price may actually reflect the condition?

Your post basically said 'don't bother, save yourself a trip' - that's called putting people off.

Now you suprise me Dom. You are normally the voice of reason and the font of all knowledge but on this one I think you`ve got it all upside down. Whether the mileage is right (especially on a LHD car is immaterial, treat it as you find it at that age ie if it looks to have done lots of work then it`s tired if not then great.

But a car that shows signs of badly repaired accident damage is potentially something that no amount of money can cure. It`s actually more expensive to correct a badly repaired car than to repair the damage properly in the first place. And one of the reasons a lot of left hand drive cars end up over here is to hide a past history of accident damage, (ie if we exported a car on VCAR the it no longer appears on VCAR in it`s new home coutry.

If a car needs a new engine 23 bolts and a cup of tea later the job is done. If it needs a new bodyshell you`ll need to get some pasties and a couple of sleeping bags to go with the cup of tea because your in for the long haul !

As ever keep up the good work

Henry

I didn't intend to suggest buying it if it was indeed a banana-shaped donkey. I was just saying that it was cheap as a plate of David Dickinson's finest and that *if* it was just minor panel probs then could still be worth doing.

Basically, it needs a proper mechanical inspection before anyone can pass judgment on it. That's what the voice of reason was trying to communicate.

Thank you for your continued support and selfless provision of wagon wheels,
D
