Brand new 997S, I can pick Cobalt and a few toys (PSE, Sports suspension, Short shift) or a used 996 turbo.

Still liking to looks of the 996 but the interior may be a let down compared to my current P car.

Any opinions?

997 S for me.
Agree about the interior. However, I'm not a track day man and rarely drive flat out, but I guess if you value speed above all else, then the Turbo may be the way to go ...

Is the 997 you mention just the spec you'd go for, or do you have a particular car in mind?

If you were a trackday fan you would know a Carrera S is faster on track than a Turbo especially with -20mm

We have tough lives, don't we? I've got a 997S and I love it, but sometimes, I find my eyes being led astray by passing Turbos or GT3s. My only advice would be if you really can't choose, buy the 996 Turbo. That way if you do change your mind, you won't lose so much in depreciation. I reckon getting out of a brand new 997 quite quickly will hurt. (Financially, I mean.)

Just an opinion but i think the 997 gt3 will be a fairly safe bet for your dollars for a couple of years a least, its new and low production numbers helps.I think the biggest difference is that the new car is'nt just a track day only tool, normal seats sat nav etc.
When my time comes this is the car for me.

I was faced with the same terrible dilemma and went for a very well specced 996 Turbo with the X50 option.
I think they offer serious bang for buck and I prefer the looks.
On track it's a heavy car and I'm waiting till the 29th April to find out how a new set of Pagid pads and racing blue brake fluid will cope. Then I'll fit a new set of rear tyres! These will have lasted 3000 road miles and two track days.

996 GT3s aren't as cosseting on the road as the other cars he mentions so perhaps ruled out on those grounds? The 997 GT3 may be a better compromise on that front as a road car.

Dont know if this has been debated endlessley already - I actually prefer the 966 to the 997 look especially now the 997s been around a bit - (he says trying to prop up residuals) - but really I think its a step backwards (externally), and I know the old skool 911 die hards love the old look - but for example I reckon 996 GT2 looks better than any 993 - christ if we didnt evolve we'd still be in model Ts....
right i've had too much coffee, I'll get my coat..

I have had a couple of 997 C2Ss - but test drove a 996 TT a couple of weeks ago and was blown away. If you can't hold on for (or splash the cash on) a 997 TT then I'd personally plump for a 996 TT - they represent great value at the moment having depreciated very hard in the last year or so.

I also think that the 996 TT looks fantastic - and have yet to be convinced by the looks of the 997 TT (though typically in they grown on you and look great in the flesh).

I faced the same dilemma a few months ago and came very close to buying a used 997S, but when I went to my local dealer they had a 996tt parked right next to the 997s in the showroom and to me it just looked much better and more aggresive than the 997S, especially from the rear. I still love the look of the 997 and in general think it looks much better than a regular 996, but the Turbo is in a class of it's own in my opinion.

Thanks for the opinions. On the looks front if it was a carrera I was after then the 997 gets my vote. But I love the look of the 996 turbo. We shall see.

Yep the 997S with -20mm is faster on track. Evo had some figures and I have seen it in print elsewhere. Its Nurburgring time is as fast as a GT3 Mk1 from memory so yes it will beat a Turbo on track if driven by good drivers.

Drop the 996TT -20mm as well and then see what happens.

It would be faster than a Mclaren F1 if you did that and then in turn if you dropped it a further 20mm it would be faster than Alonso's Renault.

I'd like to have the 996 turbo exterior with the 997 interior. Coming back to my 996 after 2 months in the Cayman, I can't believe how old-fashioned it feels inside...

996 does feel old fashioned. 997 interior is very well put together and 997 2s is a more engaging drive, with a more machined feel, like the 993. The gearbox feels more solid and the ride firmer, especially in sport mode.

But if you want fast, 996 Turbo.
