£10K - £14K What to buy?
Discussion
Hi Folks,
Well I've just taken a deposit from a buyer for my Jag. Which means I'm finally ready to buy a new car.
Chances are it will be a Porsche - god knows I've been contemplating it long enough! (Rich36
)
Now with a budget of 10-14K I'm a little stumped. I assume I can get a good 3.2 Carrera (pre-1989) well within that and if I did I would very probably but a £1K hatchback to run around in over the winter months.
My other option is to go for a 964 model and probably use it as my only car. Fortunately I like the targa and don't mind the idea of a Tip box as I do quite a bit of stop-start commuting. So I would hopefully find something within my budget.
Any advice or views on the two propositions would be most welcome.
Also If anyone could reccommend a traveling Porsche inspector in the North West that would be helpful too.
Oh, and where have all the 964s gone? Now I'm ready to buy there appears to be bugger all for sale!
Thanks in advance!
Bob.

This chap often has plenty of good 964s. Not too many 964 Targas in your price range but a tempting 3.2 Targa.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
You've mirrorred a lot of my thoughts.
I have been keeping eye on the dealer sites although most of them are miles away from me. The trouble with dealers of course is that the 964 prices are usually over my budget.
I would like to spend more but I've got to stick to my limit as that includes a healthy allowance for repairs/servicing etc.
I do like the 944s and 968s but I'd only really like a 968 Cab the others just don't have the sense of occasion I'm looking for (a very personal thing I know).
The problem is when I think about a 968 cab I then find myself thinking - wouldn't I be better buying an early boxter?
A very good all rounder for sure probably better than a 968 cab. It certainly appeals to the head, but I'm not sure it appeals to the heart in the same way as the others.
So back to my main question.
80's 911 plus cheap runabout or 964 as only car? Any owners out there to give me their insights?
Also I'd consider buying a LHD 964 - I've driven LHD cars abroad but how are they to drive in the UK? Anyone got any experience?
Thanks again folks.

The way I managed to find a decent 964 was to find a good independant workshop, who could do a pre purchase inspection, then when I found the car privately, struck a deal whereby I had the car inspected first.
So got the inspection thumbs up and didn't pay dealers prices.
Good luck

I have to say that from a biased perspective, I would go for a 968
. Most 968 Cabs are tip. You could get a good 968 for 13K, with a bit left over just in case... Be careful though, 968's are addivtive and you just might find yourself wanting to get it onto a track, then trading the cab for a CS, then spending lots and lots of cash modding the heck out of it.

Good points guys.
David58 - you may have something there. The Boxter does tick most of the right boxes if I can only get over it's image (a purely personal thing you understand) but I'm working on it! I get the feeling I'd probably be looking at reduced running costs over a 911.
I do like the 968 and whilst it certainly fulfils my requirements, it just doesn't make my heart beat faster - perhaps it would if I drove one
rubystone - I come from a background of TVRs and Jags. Are they convetional drives? I'm not really sure.

I am lucky to have both a 968 CS and a 964 RS.
For the roads the 968 is much more civilised car even in CS spec.
The 964 is seat of your pants stuff. One mistake and it is goodbye this life and hello the next.
Both are completely different to drive so you need to go and test drive a few.
I would buy on condition and service history and take the best one to come along.

I'd like to try a Sagaris for size!
Tell ya what ruby they do go well, was sat at Goodwood on sat, sat in the sun Lizard style
& doing a bit of covert timing *shussh* & I tell ya what there was a chap in a Saggyarse putting in some flipping darn respectable times & only on Eagle F1s too, in fact i think the only thing I got as lapping quicker (& without doubt by far the quickest thing all day) was a fully slicked up 996GT3 cup car, & even then if matey in the Saggy had sticky rubber on Id say hes have been flipping close. My attempt at an unusual angle- arty shot

I would say go for a 964 LHD C2 - You are saving 5/6k buying LHD - That was a no-brainer for me. So I got a 20k 964 for 14k! See profile and webpage link.
Look at your post count its 911 (well it was when I wrote this!)- That must be a sign!
(I know that if you wait long enough it will be 968 then 986, but the time is now!)
I would agree, go private and get inspection. I'm not to sure about travelling inspectors in the NW, but Ninemeister isn't that far from you and Tech9 are in Liverpool. They may travel?
You are welcome to have a look at mine, I'm in Liverpool. PM if interested.
All the best

you may dislike the 911 if you've come from a background of everyday cars, especially if you try a 3.2.
Can't see why this should be the case, went from Mondeo to LHD 3.2, no problems, can quite happily swap between them, just find my self grabbing for the gearstick in the Mondeo on the wrong side every now and then.
Yes the are a bit raw and a very different ride to every day care, but if you are into Porsche, not a problem.
PS Not trying to be argumentative or anything!
I am biased because I have a 968CS (which is up for sale).
I dont know much about the Boxsters but what I would say about the older cars (968, 944, 964 etc) is that a well cared for example should have most of the major weak point sorted out. My car has had the Cams replaced, head repair, plate lift cured etc.
Any Porsche could turn out to be a pig of a car (like mine was until I spent a fortune fixing it) but certainly keep some money in the bank for any surprises.
You are welcome to have a try of mine.
Good luck.
