Am I mad ? LPG Bentley
Discussion
Every now and then I fantasise about getting some monster petrol drinking car and getting it converted to LPG.
Contenders are Merc CL 55 AMG (or 6.0 litre) or more recently a Bentley Continental (previous shape) 2 door coupe. Seriously stylish (and fast) ride & IMHO quite a cool car too.

It gives 10 mpg !!! in town and 14 on the motorway with a 6.7 Litre 8 cylinder turbo.
However with LPG this equates to more like 30 mpg in town and 45 out and about. Suddenly it becomes a everyday motorway car, whisper quite best in the world luxury etc etc. You can get them for £ 40K.
Means selling the 996 though so probably another pipe dream.
Am I mad, has anyone done or know of someone who’s done such a thing.

I think the government has committed to tax rises only on a transparent 5 year horizon. I.E the rises are published in advance with a 5 year warning and are basically static and have been so for a long time.
Gas tank exploding ! The dangers are obvious. Sadly typical BBC style, they document the event not the reason. Could have been smoking a cigarette for all we know.

I think you will find that there is one very large stumbling block. You cannot fit LPG to a supercharged or turbocharged vehicle.
Not true.
There was an LPG powered Audi TT (over 300bhp) running for the last few years in the Langstreckenmeisterschaft. www.vln.de

How do you figure on getting a three-fold reduction in fuel consumption?

AFAIK the fuel consumption doesn't actually decrease, in fact it may well increase a bit. The saving is made by the lower cost of fuel and with LPG roughly half the price of Unleaded, you can double the petrol powered mpg. For a car that usually returns 10mpg, you would get the equivalent of around 20mpg in fuel cost terms.

It doesn't decrease, in fact it increases, in the sense that you should reckon on getting 80 percent of the equivalent petrol derived mpg, you should also bear in mind that it will still use petrol, albeit a smaller amount when it utilises the lpg. Having said this, you should still be quid’s in over a certain annual mileage to offset the initial capital cost. After this cost has been absorbed, you'll be nicking revenue back from 'Highwayman Brown'...

When I looked into this a couplf of years ago with a view to biyinng a jeep or Range Rover it seemed not without its pitfalls.
I got the view from speaking to a number of fitters that several trips back to the garage are usually required before everything runs well. Also You need a conversion which is well proven on your car. 4/5 years ago they had cracked the 6 cylinder jeeps but the V8s were still highly problematic and several fitters woud not even attempt to convert them.
In the end it seemed too much like hard work even on cars whick were supposed to be easy and well catered for. So trying to pioneer a kit for something like the car your describe sounds quite brave to me.
The fue lfugure I was quited was 80/90% that of petrol and there is some loss of power I believe
Unless I'm mistaken isn't LPG about 47p /litre now i.e. still about half the price of pertrol
