The Cayman is amazing regardless of the power. You could de-power it and it'd still be bloody good. Personally I'd rather spend £35k on a lesser powered, lesser specc'd Cayman than an Audi.
I don't need convincing on the brilliance of Porsche's lesser products trust me. But I thought the objective of the Cayman S was to deliver a performance that much better than any Boxster. I've driven the car and there's no doubt that it's playing at a higher level than the Boxster/Boxster S......but I personally couldn't make an argument for a Cayman with a BHP figure lower than the Boxster S.

Oooh, I think you're missing a big point here. Horses for courses. I don't agree that was the objective at all.
I've just had a Boxster on loan for a week. Top spec, 1 month old.. should be pretty similar to my Cayman just with less power, right? Wrong. I was very surprised. The Boxster and the Cayman are totally different cars to drive daily and to live with. I don't care how many parts they share or that they're built round the same principle or that "its just a Boxster coupe" / "its just a convertible Cayman"... they're very, very different. They are both fantastic, but in their own way.
So what I'm saying is (IMHO!) someone would be in the market for an Audi TT / Nissan 350 / Cayman nonS ... OR... a Boxster / MX5 / S2000 / etc.

The dealer told me on wednesday that the Cayman non S is due to be launched in the next couple of weeks and at the same time they are going to announce a power hike for the Boxster S (he thought they would put in the Caymna engine.)
Don't know if he's got his timing right or what but one thing did strike me about what he said. Why raise the power of BoxsterS unless the non S cayman is going to get the 3.2? Makes sense to me, otherwise in marketing terms it would be a lot harder to differentiate the non S from the non S boxster and also it moves it comfortably out of the way of the new TT.
Oh and Pikey I went for the other one in the end. Wifes indifference won out

I've promised myself a used one when they drop below 40K and the wife can drive.(she'll get the/a Family car in other words)
As for your point on the pace aspect of a non-S Cayman I agree. It would lose some sales for people who want to beat everyone of the lights but as I always say to friends its how well it goes around a corner and not how fast it is on the straights. and from my limited experience nothing this side of a track day car would be more fun in those corners.

£35k sounds very reasonable and a lot less that other rumoured prices for the non-S, were you told this price by an OPC?

DEFINITELY no reasons to not purchase one. Absolutely love it. Superb! Really, really, really GREAT car!!
