funny noise...

After the car has been running for a bit, and warmed up, I am getting a continuous whirring noise from the left hand side of the car. It's difficult to pin-point, but it appears to come from the front ( could be wrong here! ) The sound is quite high pitched like a bird cheeping continuously. I don't think it's a wheel bearing, but who knows? Any guesses out there? Is there a fan in the front...oil cooler? {993TT by the way} Help please it's not been my week!! 
Ive just had the front PU off my 993 and one of the plastic surrounds on one the radiators had split on one corner allowing it to come into contact with the fan blade, the fan had still worked and worn a neat hole in the surround i had not noticed any noise but it must have been like this for a while. I assume these radiators are for the air con, take the wheel arch liners off and you can check if the fans spin freely, just something to check in your search for the squeek, chin up it will be something and nothing its a 993 remember, things could be a lot worse you could own a 996 
.......Or Aircon fan catching plastic , there are a couple of oil cooler pipes across there that are a tight fit , one big bump and can all move a bit and bring things together ..............also, but inside the front pu ABS pump ..............red lights would stay on though on dash if it does nt pump up .
Left front is AC condensor; that fan should only run if the AC is on unless you have a duff relay or climate control unit.
Right front is oil cooler; that fan should only run when the oil temp gauge gets up around the 09:00 mark on low speed and at high speed when it gets to about 9:45. There's a procedure on www.p-car.com/diy where you can test the fan operation (with the intent of checking the resistors) but you can also do that to see if that's the noise you're hearing.

had this noise on my alfa gtv. it got worse the longer i drove the car. after much consultation it was finally diagnosed as corroded discs. i had to replace the rear discs and the pads. if the noise stops on braking then this will be the answer i think.
annoyingly the same noise has just started on my 968 cab - although at least i know what it is this time!

The 968's going really well thanks David - although being kept in my father's garage he's using it more than I am. Moving in June to Dorking where I'll have a garage and more parking. The tiptronic makes it a real cruiser and easy for everyone to drive. When I've saved enough pennies, a 911 should give me a nicely balanced garage (if I can bear to lose the GTV).

Good to hear its going well Richard. I'm down to three at the moment the 928, 996 and 965, sold my 964 to my brother who has been blown away by it. Am getting itchy about a 996 TT but probably a pipe dream, would have to sell all three and I dont want to do that. I would say sell the GTV (and I love Alfa's)and get a 911 just brilliant cars, come to think of it I still owe you that test drive !
At last!!...found the cure to the noise..it was the heating/cooling fan on the left-hand side of the car, just in front of the passenger. A little WD40-like squirt did the job, and it's peace at last!! I suppose it took a little time to warm up and start annoying me; at least it didn't require major surgery! Thanks to Greg at Tognola Eng. in Datchet for finding the squeek! It' going in tomorrow for a new wheel stud and clay bar/Zymol treatment...will report on the results.....
