Buying advice please?!?!?!

Hello All,
Wondering if you kind gents can give me a hand. I'll cut to the chase I've managed to save £40k and want to buy my first 911. I think I've settled on a [996] Carrera 2 or 4 Cab - basically is this good? Am I looking at the right ones? What should I look for, faults etc? Is my budget too low or ok? And above all - running costs, what am I letting myself in for?? Any help you guys can share would be v. v. useful!!!!

I have had both a 997 coupe and a cab. I LOVED the coupe but never quite bonded with the cab. The cab is to a roof what tip is to a gearbox. Go for a coupe every time - 911s IMHO do not look good as cabs (where a 430, M3, Aston does) because the engine always requires a hump back. Dynamically they are not as good either - and the 996 is tortionally worse than the 997 I had.

navray - £40k is good money to spend on a 996... can you go an extra £6k or so and get an early 996 TT? That's what I would do - an absolute beast (I have never owned one but driven a few). For everyday practical use it also beats the GT2/3 - and is a league apart from the Carreras in terms of performance.

Right then, seems like a coupe is the way forward then - as for going over 40k, I can't really cos I've saved some for insurance etc.
I want the car for urban driving and bombing around the M25 and M20 - but not for work - got a mashed up Golf GTI for that, and it does the trick perfectly. My bro is trying to convince me into a M3 - but is just that porsche appeal which is pulling me. To be honest as I'm new to this league of car ownership - I'm just well confused with it all!?!?!?!? Oh yeah and I wanna get it before the bird does one...

Stick to your guns man - Cab's are always gonna get a slating on forums like this...
The 996 Cab is a great car - granted, not as dynamic as a coupe, but still very accomplished. I came from a series of fairly 'hard-core' coupe's and the added dimension of the soft top far outweighs the loss of pure driver appeal - especially in the SE where the traffic is tragic....
BTW £40k should get a reasonably nice early facelift model (02 model)....

Repeat after me: NO M3, NO M3, NO M3!!!! Have you thought about maybe a 993tt? Great car, much quicker than a 996 C2 or C4, and when your used to the power you can throw a bit of money at it and turn it into a monster, you'll get a nice one for well under 40k! Just a thought, oh and it's not a water pumper
