On the 996 it is the 996 "S" models that have the turbo body but the 320 HP non-blown engine. So basically it is a faceliftet (MY2002) 996 on stereoids.
On the 997 it is the Carrera 4S only that is 44 mm wider over the back than the Carrera 2 and 2S.
Wasn't the facelift 3.6 litre and 340 hp?
"The width is governed by whether it is 4wd or 2wd (hence 997 4 AND 4s have wider rear than 997 and 997s)"
And FWIW, the 993 model is different in this respect in that it has a widebody if it's a C2S, C4S, Turbo, Turbo S or GT2. The first and last ones are rear wheel drive only, all the others are 4wd.
Er... that's right isn't it? Actually beyond the 993 are all GT2s rear wheel drive?

Can anyone explain this:
Carrera 2 width 1765 mm
GT3 mk1 width 1652 mm
