Okay, sorry for all the questions - but i'm doing as much research as i can while chained to a desk so when i do the leg work i'm suitably knowledgable.

I've seen a 996 at a reasonable cost, but its almost at 100k miles, from a positive side, its just had a major (1300 quid apparantly) service, but...

porsche might be reliable, but as i add the miles ontop of the 100k is it going to be expensive? Would it be worth spending more originally to get a lower mileage car?

What year is it? I'd rather have a high mileage newer car than a low mileage older one.Maybe that's just me, but I think it's age rather than mlles that tires a car.I would be wary of a very low mileage car.It obviously assumes that the high mileage car has a full service history etc. If it's done inter galactic miles it at least proves it's not spent all it's time in the garage. Probably been done on motorways with little stress.

Mileage isn't as important as condition.

Except there are definite advantages in an OPC warranty which has an age and mileage limitation... (can't remember off the top of my head what it is).

its a 98...

but its only a couple of grand less than an equivalent 98 with 70k...

I'd automatically figure spending the extra money on the lower mileage was worth it..

OPC Warranty up to 125,000 miles, 10 years.

Porsche must think they can last 100k

its not it lasting TO 100k - its how long after...

if its up to 125k, i think i might go for the lesser as i'd easily hit that in 2 years with a 100k car..

If you're doing high miles then I don't think there's much point paying a premium for a low mileage car. It'll soon become a high-mileage car, and you'll have lost more money.

How long would you intend to keep it?

Wow, you lot are almost starting to talk sense !

Certainly don`t pay a premium only to then destroy it by putting on miles yourself. There are no magic numbers at which things happen, it all depends how much work a car does. We`ve done a top end overhaul on a 3.2 Carrera at under 30k mls and had 300k mls cars in that haven`t had the engine apart. 2 very different usage profiles.

It all comes down to price. Providing the mileage is taken into account on the pricing you`re fine. The number on the speedo dictates the most you can ask for a car, the condition it`s value up to that point.

There is no percievable difference between 50k miles and 100k miles, ie you wouldn`t necessarily be able to tell which was which, it would all come down to how much work each car had done.

I'll be doing 10-15k a year, so not a huge number...

and its not that i'm looking to pay a premium for a low mileage, just whether saving a few quid on a high miler is a good idea..

ie paying a premium for the number on the speedo. If you think 10-15k a year is normal what does that mean an 8 year old 1998 996 will have done so far assuming "average"?

Simple-factor in a engine and gearbox rebuild at a specialist at 125k miles -lets say £8k. Still make sense??

Is there such a thing as a 3.4 that's done 100k miles? Surely you just need to make sure the engine was changed at the 48k and 96k services, and you're all set for the next ~50k.

...my car is at 98k miles at the mo. It's a '99 C4. Original engine/transmission - only one RMS leak at about 80k miles. Still pulls like a train - especially with Optimax!

Whilst I cannot comment directly on a 996 , I have sold the following cars with mileage and can count on one hand the problems I had in ownership ( all used as daily drivers )

944 S ( Sold with 171,000 ! ) owned for 4 years .. nothing at all major mechanical

928 GT ( Sold with 120,000 something ) owned for about 16 months , new clutch

968 Sport ( Sold with 143,000 ) owned for 2 years , not a jot barring regular service work and discs and pads etc

968 Club Sport ( Sold with 111,000 ) owned for only 6 months .. nothing major again

Current motor 993 Cab ... 112,000 owned for about 16 months , so far new clutch , lots of minor niggles and a new hood £££££'s

High mileage ( or average dependent on year ) just doesnt phase me with these motors , however condition is the key, good friend of mine bought a 944 S2 with 33,000 miles on about 2 years ago , garaged never used and has spent in the region of about £8,000 since on getting the car spot on ...

There was a chap on recently , from Belgium I think , who had put up around 235k kms on his boxter.
If you search rennlist for high milage 996 threads , you will find comfort in some of the huge numbers people are clocking up out there.

Lets not get TOO paranoid folks

Warm the engine nicely before a thrash .. Keep an eye on t's and p's .. make sure it's got enough oil and coolant , go forth and enjoy the wonderful machine you're lucky enough to be running.

Oh yes ... one other thing .. remember

ALL PORCHES LEAK OIL .. It's a univeral constant... Oil , and the thingys that hold oil in , come cheap.

Exactly. And the majority of the car-buying British public have this ingrained fear of purchasing cars with over 100k miles, so if it's a question on whether it crosses this threshold before or during your tenure of the car, I would have thought before would be the better option - that way you won't be taking the cost hit when you come to sell it!!
