996 v Maserati 4200 spyder

I swaped cars with my friend for an hour, my 98 996 tiptronic V's his 04 4.2 spyder flappy paddle.
I could not get over the diffrence, the maza felt so angry, good fun for an hour but it would soon become very tiresome. He could not get over how easy the 996 is to drive.
When we got back we looked up the net to see how much faster his car was... I was shocked to find it has the same performance figures, it felt so much faster. or is it that porsche don't have to shout from the rooftops about there performance..
Anyway I would take the 996 anyday given the choice

correct it won't suffer from RMS but it'll suffer from almost every other disease known to car.

How can 390bhp in a 4200 spider equal a standard 996?
My missues drives hers daily and with a TUBI it sounds mega!!
I think the Masa is faster accelerating thats for sure as I drove my friends 996 back to back and it's defo not as aggressive on the up, and with the F1 box it's way quicker on the downs. Fiona's car is the latest as it changed in 05 to a different car, with much better chassis and gearbox rework, and a glass rear window for better rear view.
I'd say handling they are completey different beasts and suit toally different driving styles.
I'm not sure how you can call a stunning car like the 4200 Spider hideous when Porsche can't be ar5ed to build anything quite so beautiful.

A 1998 3.4L 996 is quoted as 300bhp, 230bhp per tonne and 0-60 4.6secs
A Maserati 4200 spyder is quoted as 390bhp, 229bhp per tonne and 0-60 4.9secs.
On paper they are very even, not driven a 4200 but would expect it to pull better than a 996 due to midrange torque. I had a jag XKR and it felt much quicker midrange and that is similar figures to the 4200. but you try following a 996 on a windy road.

XKR felt fast? Really? I borrowed a mates XKR in the US last week for a couple of hours drive. It felt monumentally slow to me. I do like the shape of the car though.

In a straight line it was great 400ft/lb torque was great. I went out with a load of Boxster guys and the XKR was gaining on them all guns blazing, but as soon as the turny bits arrived I was losing ground all the time.
If you use the XKR J box as a semi auto selecting gears as you would with a maual it drives so much better, using the full rev range and engine braking on the kick down, I loved it, just a bit of an old mans car :flamesuiton:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....so each to there own other wise we'd all be chasing the same woman.
One the worst things about the Maser is the scuttle shake and the steering wheel jumping out of your hands on bumpy corners. I've driven and still own some primitive old sports cars that don't do this. Hidious

Erm... because I don't like the look of them maybe !! I just think they are visually ugly. If you like them then great, I'm happy for you. Each to their own and all that. You may think my car is ugly, that's fine by me...
This thread has gotten me into trouble! .. A 'friend' of mine has gone all huffy with me cause I dared slight his mazza , making insinuations as to similar performance figures between his and mine!!
I also never realised how much he looked down on my basement C2.
