My First 996 - upto 30k v.max to spend - Advice please

Happy days I've just got the OK from the boss(the Wife) to get my first Porsche!!
Obviously I need to get the right car, I intend to keep for 3+ years and will do around 15k per year. I've got a v.max of 30k to spend, but anything under will increase the brownie points, more money for the wife's handbag fetish! Oh and I promised her a puppy if I could get the Porsche, thankfully I didn't sign anything!
So I need your help, what should I be looking for? Spec, colour, year, extra's? I've been told wheels and sat-nav are 2 extra's that will be important in resell.
So I look forward to your responses and joining the club!

First thing I'd do is try the different variants, C2, C4, manual, tippy, coupe, cab.
On your budget you're looking at a 3.4, lots of good ones about. Buy on condition rather than age, and get it inspected.

Yeah keep looking at that one. Love the colour. I need to find a nice dealer who will take me out in a few so I can choose. I've got an S3 at present and owned a Lancia Intergrale Evo so am tempted by a C4. I intend on getting some driver training so that I can enjoy the car also.
Can't bring myself to spend the money on anything other then a manual coupe. If I need the wind in my hair I can pop my head outa the wifes Mini Cooper S's sunroof!

Despite what you may read on message boards/be told by some bloke in the pub you CAN buy a decent 996 3.4 for less than £30K. I got mine last Oct (a 3.4 C4 tip - I set out looking for a C2 manual!) and have been delighted with it. The best advice is indeed to buy on condition rather than mileage/price/exact spec - and get friendly with your local specialist 'cos he's going to save you a fortune compared to an OPC! Like I say, I set out for a C2 manual and ended up with a C4 tip, just because that car was in the condition I was after and, after driving it, ticked all the right boxes for me. I would suggest you may want to spend about £26-£27K on the car and keep £2-3K back for servicing/dealing with problems, especially if you buy privately or without warranty.

I've got an Integrale, and wanted a C4. I've got two kids under 5, so the C2 provides a bit more luggage space.
Totally different experience to the Grale, as you'd expect.
My budget was early 30s, in the end I spent 27k. I looked at loads, it was the oldest one, but in the best nick, had a Porsche warranty too.
I've only had mine a couple of months, wish I'd got one earlier.
Can't recommend them enough.

I don't think Sat Nav is important in a sub £30k car... It's more to go wrong, and I don't think there will be many early cars out there with it anyway.....
If you've enjoyed the delights of an Integrale, then don't be fooled into thinking all 4wd cars will be the same. The C4 is a great car, and maybe better as an everyday proposition, but the C2 is a much better steer IMHO.... more tactile, if you like. BUt the best way is to get a drive in both - there are some strange people out there that actually prefer the C4...!

Don't even think about a Tip BTW....Thanks for all the comments. I live in Ealing. Won't get a tip. My view with the C4 is it might help if I over cook a drive, I ain't no weel man hence wanting to get some driver training for the porsche. The Grale was a small chuckable car as is the wifes MCS so I felt more confident in those.
But as I haven't actual driven a car yet my comments are from what I read and feel in my bones.

You can't take the libertys that you could in a Grale, but they're suprisingly tolerant.
C2 with PSM could be the ideal compromise. Even the 2wd variants have excellent traction.Yeah I took the Grale to Cornwall before I sold it. Wow what a week, the wife hated it as she was sat on the right and could see the cars comming before I could and those roads are sooo narrow. Broke the rear strut brace bracket on the last day's blast earliy in the morning without the wife in the car. It was a childhood dream to own the car and I am a much better person for it. But it did make me believe I was a good driver......until I did a driving day at Brands Hatch!! Hope to get out on Sunday to lok at some cars. Realize the way to save the cash is private with a independant check of the car.

Mine's not a fan of the Grale either. 
what does she like. I spent 3 months looking and got my self a cracking 98 996 C2 Tip for 26.5. and was well cuffed.
Then I seen the advert for the EVO 996 thats at top of thread. I couldn't belive it they are like buses, nothing decent ( and I was starting to lower my standards )on the market then 2 come along.. on paper at least I can not advise you strongly enough to go and at least look at that car, to set a benchmark.
OPC are asking £33k for good early 996's, I like my car a lot but even I know they are not worth that.
