GT3 Oil Level

Hi

Just finally got hold of my Mk1 GT3 but the manual is in German
Anyone knows if it's possible to check oil level on the display?

Assuming its the same as a normal 996, turn the key halfway so all the warning lights come on, and this will then do an oil check countdown on the screen

Best to do on the flat, and when the engine is at running temp

To get the screen display on the oil level you need to run the car until its up to proper operating temperature, about 10 mins normal driving will do. Then with the engine running come to a top on a flat piece of road and wait for about 60 seconds(do not touch the throttle or release the clutch. The display will then appear as a series of orange bars, a bit like a miniature digital speedo.

No substitute for checking the dipstick.

My GT3 mannual says (and i've tried it and it works) is that the only time the electronic checker on the dash comes in is at idle (after 15 or so seconds) AFTER you have driven at over 3000 revs (it may be 4000 revs but definitely 3 or 4) for 10 seconds.

When i got the car, i didn't read the mannual and thought for all the world that the thing didn't work - until i read it, tried it and it works.

To check using the dipstick, the engine must be running & the aircon turned off, as well as the oil being up to temp etc. The digital gauge seems to do the job ok though.

The electronic gauge is fine, but as said, you need to get it all up to temp and then run it over 3000 rpm for 10 seconds. Pull over and let it idle. In about 20 seconds or so the oil indicator will come on. It wold be much easier if you could just press a button!

Make sure you get the engine nice and hot. Even with the engine coolant at 80 deg, if I've only had the car running for a few minutes the oil level will always read low.

If in doubt, use dipstick. Try not to overfill it!!

You can use the option in the computer memory - a bit quicker than waiting.

Thank you very much for your help! If I can't check the oil level now I guess I'll never can!!!!
As for the temp you're rigth: the 964 RS had an oil temp gauge and it took quite a while for the oil temp to be ok...

hes right. least. reliable. gauge. ever.

if its breezy, it'll under read.

if its warm, it'll under read.

if theres leaves on the line, it'll under read.

if youve over-filled it, it'll over read.

if youre on a incline of .000001 of a degree it'll under read.

if its bored, it'll under read.

if it doesnt like your shoes, it'll under read.

if i were you, id use the dipstick
