estimate to cure a 964 oil leak

Hi

It appears I have two oil leaks on my 964 and before I get them fixed I want some information on how much people think it might cost to repair so I do not get ripped off.

The first is coming from the drivers side camshaft chain cover and the second from the power steering pump drive seal.

Finally, is there any chance that the oil leaks are worse than I thought, and only appear to be from those places?

It is difficult to say without inspecting the car. The forum makes a very poor four post ramp and the postees are generally not air ratchet wielding grease monkeys

However, you could be looking at 2.5-4k at least on stripping and rebuilding an engine to make it dry again. The power steering pump may be cheaper and simpler, perhaps, if it can be done in isolation? If the leaks aren't bad just keep the oil level checked and full and you may be able to live with it until finances allow.

If it is just the cam chain cover ie the lid then not a lot, it will just need a gasket. If you mean the cam covers the covers than run along the side of the engine then that will be cheaper still as it can def be done with engine in situ.

Power steering pump shouldnt be a major stress either.

You doing the work yourselves?

...the words "964 oil leak" automatically get a £2.5k reply.
Given that the leaks are NOT going to require an engine rebuild (as is the case with 99% of 964 oil leaks) it won't be too bad. Easiest thing to do is call a couple of specialists, and your local OPC and ask.

If the engine doesn't need to come out then it shouldn't cost more than a few hundred quid for a few parts and a few hours labour surely?

re: the cam cover gaskets, some people get away with nipping up the 10mm bolts a touch. you might be lucky.
the powersteering seal is about £20 and just takes a time. you can do it yourself, you don't need any special tools.

For me it depends on how bad the leaks are, because there are 2 main reasons for me to strip and rebuild the engine, lack of power or bad oil leaks.
So is leak so bad that it actually has to be fixed ?
Is the engine getting tired and needs a rebuild ?

Yes to either = start to spend your money, no to both = no need to do anything... for now !!

If the time is right, consider a 12000 mile service and have the cam cover leak done at the same time gratis.

the cam covers on these cars are sometimes porous (hope i spelt that right) so they need replacing last 1 i did the cover was £160

Looking at getting power steering seals redone, quoted around £200 inc. labour & vat.

Another leak, new oil tank pipes replacements at around £500 inc. (Pipes are bloody expensive!)

Mines a 965 so probably more expensive than yours too.

Its the cam chain cover not the cam cover. I presume they are different?

Power steering pump seal replacement is about £210 labour and £10 parts (plus VAT). Not sure about the cam chain covers, though I don't think it's an engine-out job, as these have to be removed to set the timing.

On my 964 the actual tank started springing leaks ie it became porous!

Power steering seal is about a 2 hour job, drop the exhaust box, unbolt the exhaust carrier and than you can take off the pump and the seal is than easy to get at. If the cam chain cover is leaking than it is an engine out job. The cam chain cover is half way between the tinwork and there is no way to access the tinwork without removing the engine, you could do it on the early cars but not 964's
