I'll apologise in advance for asking more 996 questions... but i'm getting there

1. Clutch.
On a test drive today, the car had a much lighter clutch than other 996's i had driven, the salesguy (of reputuable specialist sales) said that the clutch gets heavier the more worn it is, and that a light clutch is good.
Is this true?

2. Dash.
The car i drove was *cough* a savanna interior *cough*, and in direct sunlight, the dash reflected quite badly in the windscreen. Which probably isnt normally an issue, but since i'm related to Frodo Baggins, it was right in my sight line, and was quite annoying. I didn't experience this in the black interior'd cars, but is this due to it being clean and shiney, rather than the colour?
Would it fade with time? Or would this be a permament feature?

3. Mileage.
Is there a certain mileage when the value of a 996 will nosedive?

4. It has a phone feature, which requires you to insert a sim on a card, does this mean i have to get another mobile sim? or can you buy cards to insert your sim into?

oh, and thanks to Jamie (Magic Torch) for checking this out for me yesterday, it was well worth the 5 hour round trip... great car, and im very tempted...

1. Mines been getting heavier and more 'clunky' when cold of late , so I'd say the dealer's right on the clutch front.
2. Mine's the unmentionable interior too .. I HAVE noticed you get a bit of glare , but you get used to it quickly , it's no biggie.. Buy a pair of Porsche shades to complete the makeover!
3. Everyone's going to have a different opinion but the big 100k is when I see the residuals really plumeting .. If you're getting it at a good price partly due to higher miles , but it's been well cared for (you haven't said if it has a full service history..), well then it's quids in for you , but you will have to consider that it will influence things when you sell . There's nathin for nathin these days!

My feel (from afar) is that you're getting a good deal ... If it's well cared for , forget the miles. A 30k car can be a dog if it's been 'unloved'.

yeah, thanks BC...

At first the interior, was, erm, shocking, but i got used to it...

it has the FSH, and seems to be in good nick for 70k... which is about 14k a year, so only a bit over average, but a lot of 996's seem to be sub 50k (even 98's). It had a few stone chips up front, one or two covered with a splodge of paint, but it's probably had a front end respray, other than that, the bodywork/interior was pretty much spot on.

But the interior and mileage are the reason I can [almost] afford this car...

I just dont want to throw away my money if after 2 years and 20k its going to be [realtivley] worthless...

Hi mate.

Not much more I can add. Agree 100k seems to be a mental block, though the Porsche warranty will apply on higher miles.

Clutch thing seems about right. I'm getting mine replaced when they do the RMS.

Must admit I didn't notice th front paintwork, must have been the artificial light.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there , without realising..
The reason you're able to get more car for your money , is the same reason someone else is going to benefit when you're selling..
I'd imagine if you sell at 101k you'll do alot worse than if you get an extra year out of it and sell at 115k for example , so if you wanted you could plan ahead for the least depreciation for YOU.
Personally I think you're in a great position that you've suddenly found you can have a facelift...
Obviously your choice , but it's basically a case of low mileage 3.4 v's mid mileage 3.6.
Is it time to quote the Henmeister.. 'Buy on condition'??

Nearly all of them were on charge when I dropped by.

I often don't use mine for a week, never had a problem. And it's got a power sapping alarm on it too.

Yeah .. never had a problem with my battery .. Dare I say it , it affects 993's more. There's a built in mode that reduces battery drain after a week of non-use on the 996 .. It involves the remote sensor in the car going off line or something , but it prolongs the charge big-time.

so, what are suggesting? find a 3.4 or go for the 3.6?

If the 3.6 is in excellent condition ,then the mileage should not mean so much , but if you have low mileage as a hi priority then you've got some thinkin to do !!!!

I don't want to feel like I'm influencing you .. It's only my silly opinion,

3.6, it'll always have 'something' over earlier 996s, which'll help at resale time.

Did you try a Boxster?

Okay ... Magic has said it .. I agree 100% .. The 3.6 will always hold value over the 3.4 , it's probably a better engine too , MAYBE less chance of failure , plus the newer the car the longer you can re-warranty it...

If it was me , I'd get it ... Now -time for a gunga din with the wife....

Think we've summed it up.

Logging off and opening a bottle of something ourselves, have a good weekend all

cool, cheers guys...

in all honesty, the car was suffering from 'the fault that shall not be named', but they said that would be fixed as part of the service/prep when the car is sold.

I havent tried a boxster yet, tried yesterday but got some spotty teenager saying 'well you can have a test drive if your really serious about buying it' (the same one incidently that told me the boxster service intervals were 18k)

But ive seen a nice S 1 hour from here, so ill try and skive off work monday to have a go, and see which way the wind blows me...

(by the way,the boxster S is same age, half the mileage, 10k cheaper... i think a good comparison point to whats important to me)

but yes, im leaning towards the 3.6.... even with the savannah...

the first thing is '33 grand'...

I worry its 'a bit flash', and can imagine i would be paranoid about parking it and not able to go anywhere in it..

secondary is the interior did reflect on the screen a bit, which was annoying, and it was a touch high mileage, but these are the reasons i can afford the car, I accept them...

Thanks for the help, and sorry for being a pain... I'm sure i'll make my mind up sooner or later
