My drivers window squeaks big time when I raise or lower it when it's really hot. I've read that it's usually the cable that causes the squeak, not the runners. Can the window cable be lubed or is it the nylon sort that has to be replaced?

Is it a frameless door?

Yup, 996 cab. My Boxster used to do it too but not as loud. Passenger side is fine.

Before you go into the regulator assembly with a tub of grease, it may be worth considering that the glass may be mis-alligned thus rubbing against the inner / outer weather strips. try putting pressure on the glass inwards (and out) as it rises. Or, spray some water / alcohol based cleaner on both sides of the glass to see if it still squeaks. Could be a rubber-to-glass thing.

Paul.

Thanks for the tip Paul, I'll give that a go when it gets hot at lunch time. It does sound like a rubber on glass squeak.

Hmmm, Well pushing it in all directions didn't help and it doesn't appear to be dry rubbers as the bloke from the garage next door helpfully came out and popped some spray on them for me.

Any tips as to where to look next greatfully received.

Spray silicon lubricant on the rubber/glass and repeatedly move the window up and down that should sort the problem out......it did on mine!

Hmmm.,

The rubber weather strips are designed to minimse the amount of water / fluid that goes down into the door; Mr Friendly Garage Man may have lubed the immediate areas but perhaps a 'lip' lower down is giving the vibrating noise, or it could be in the runner / channel itself.

If you feel up to removing the door card, remove any protective / sound-proofing membrane to expose the mechanism assembly and all fixings.
Loosen (only enough to slacken) all nuts and bolts (aim for all related fixings) and operate the window a few times. This should give you an idea if the noise is coming as a result of mis-allignment. If so, try and adjust the poistion of the glass N.B. taking care to move in increments of millimeters and find the best position for the glass / regulator assembly.
For good measure, lube the inside of any rubber that makes contact with the edges of the glass. It is worth noting that doing this to the horizontal weather strips will mean that you'll coat your glass with lube every time you lower it!

Sorry this is a bit brief but best I can do without over-complicating things for you (and writing a full Haynes style essay!)

Good luck mate.

Do you drive to work, if so, where do you work?

Regards,

Paul.

Thanks for the tips

I think it'll be a door card off job (conveniently removing one trim from the equation) and then temporarily removing the rubber from the door so the window is running on it's guides alone.

What I was keen to do is avoid lubing the cables if the regulator is going to ingest whatever I put on the cable. I know there are some nylon cables out there that aren't supposed to be lubed.

Note to self:
Remember to disconnect the battery to avoid getting blown up by the airbag!

Mine had exactly the same sort of symptoms....after having a new drivers side window installed (long story...) Turns out that RAC Windscreens had installed it fractionally too high, when compared to passenger side, therefore giving sqeaking noise from where the top edge of glass was rubbing against "something" that sits in between the rubber weather trim...anyway, net result is that a careful bit of adjustment as mentioned above to drop the glass by 1-2mm was all thats required.

Make sure ignition is off when delving inside door cavity, RAC man told me a pretty nasty story of a fella whos window motor actuated whilst his fingers were in the way...

...[thread hijack=on] does anyone know how to cure sqeaking at the rear...been told its rear windscreen rubbing against body?...same as 993's had apparently, but they had a foam in-fill kit to cure it. Is it a window out/re-align job? [thread hijack=off....sorry and thanks!]
