My brother in law fancies a 944, with a budget of £3500 max.
Not being too clued up on older models, esp the 944 can anyone offer any advice ?

Appreciate at that price its maybe going to be a money pit to run and £3500 he isn't going to get the best example (before everyone replies saying this !), but any advice on best model to get, mileage, running costs, buying advice, common problems etc etc, would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Sure it can be done.

My pretty much perfect (though high miles) S2 went to Henry for £3K and he sold it next day (I was collecting my 993 that weekend so in a bit of a bind)

So in my view they are out there and if you are OK with miles, and since the car is basically bullet proof I wouldn't care at all about high miles on a 944 - assuming overall good condition, etc. of course.

All IMO.

944 Price depends a HUGE amount upon the model. An early 2.5 lux for £3k - easy. A late model Turbo Cabrio in good condition: No, you'd need to multiply your budget by 5 to get one of those.

Work out what model he wants, and have a hunt. They are great cars, but don;t forget to budget a little for running costs.

I bought an S2 (one of the more desirable models) for just over £4k a couple of months ago, and am still getting used to it.

Thanks guys, I think an S2 is what he should get (I am not to familiar with 944 models) deffo not a turbo, he can't afford it & it will probably cost a fortune to keep on the road even if he finds one on his budget.

S2's change hands for rather more than the lux's, and cost a load more in maintenance.

Looking at what others go for (at my local TIPEC meeting), I think I got a bargain on my S2. Shop around and you may well do the same - they are great cars - but they are not at the cheap end of the scale as far as 944 ownership goes.

On a tight budget buy a nice Lux.

the usual shout of recommendation for my previous steed, the 2.7 8v. somehat more bombproof than the 16v versions (less engine wear and less worry re the cams), more torquey than the 2.5 lux AND the 16v S, cheaper to run than the S2 with less peak performance but still more low-down grunt. a great, great car. I cry when i think how little i got for mine (selling to a dealer). i think £3.5K is cutting it fine if youre looking for a good S2, especially as a first Porsche. the better ones are still retailing privately at £5-7K. Go for a lux, avoid the S, try and find a 2.7.

Good S2's are £5k upwards, pay any less and you could have a money pit on your hands.

I bought a cherished early 944 for £3000- sold 4 years later for £2900. The early dash models are lighter(about 150kg) than the updated models (85 onwards) and a bit quicker. You do notice the weight difference, imo. I've got an S2 now, but the '84 car was easily as much fun.

All 944's in excellent condition don't seem to lose a lot of value when you come to sell them on, probably because the majority are in average condition,at best.
