SO2 PP's

I'm about to invest in some new tyres for my recently acquired Boxster (17" Wheels / M030). It currently has Bridgestone SO2 Pole Positions all round. They seem very good with incredible levels of grip on the twisty stuff.

Should I be buying the same or is there another favourite tyre for the Boxster?

What I have to say on this is all hearsay, so I stand to be corrected.

The SO2's were replaced by SO3's, some of the "Lads" who have played happily on the Nurburgring with SO2's have thrown their rattles out of their prams when driving on the replacement SO3's. Resulting in them looking at other brands.

Has anyone driven on both SO2s and SO3s on the same car? Has anyone moved from SO2's to another brand? What is everyone else running on 17 inch rims?

Hate to tell you this but SO2 PP's are not N rated. Not that this really matters but your local OPC may get excited next time your get your boxster serviced.

I have not tried S03's (I stocked up on S02's before they all went) but I've heard from numereous sources that S03's are awful on a 911. This may not be the case with a boxster.

As for an alternative, perhaps some of the other boxster owners on PH can make some suggestions.

I just had the guy from Bridgestone's technical department tell me that this afternoon in an attempt to get me to take the SO2A's that they had shipped to my local dealer and then fitted in error! Much to their dismay (and to their credit) they took them off again.

The car is of an age where it will be going to Strasse Porsce specialists in Leeds for it's next service so the OPC attitude is not really an issue for me.

I like the feel of the SO2 PP's but I may have trouble getting them - Any other suggestions please?

I alwys found yoko avs 1 to be a good primarily road but ok on the track compromise,they come in various N classifications for porkers.

I had S02's on my Honda S2000, and they were great in the dry but absolutely terrible in the wet. I'd even go so far as to say that I think they're the worst tyre I've ever used.

I've got Continentals on the 993, and they've been great in all the recent wet and cold weather.

James -surprised at your findings James -I use a set of SO2's as my 'wet' tyres for track use and they have ben simply fabulous!! Once the road used soft bits got worn off at Brands, they performed really well, wet or dry. Have cobbled together another set of cast offs for this season!!

Judging by the feedback from test sessions over the years on various tyres, it really seems that some tyres perform better than others on different cars. From my own findings, Yoko AVS's on an Audi a4 V6, fantastic! On a Porsche 911 C4, dire!! Horses for courses, I suppose.

It may be because of the particular S2000 variant of the S02 tyre, but most members of the S2K forum have had issues with the tyres at one point or another. A lot of the guys have changed to Eagle F-1's for more wet weather grip.

SO2's were judged in Many reviews as the best wet tyre available - they SO3's are not a patch on them - have you tried GoodYear F1's yet they are the closest thing I have found.

I have managed to get some SO2 PP's (I think). The confusion has arisen over the 'N3' number supposedly on the tyres. I'm aware that this means they are a Porsche approved fitment however I have looked all over my existing tyre walls and I can't find anything that says 'N3'. I have seen SO2's with the N suffix for sale along side SO2's with the PP suffix, but not, say, an SO2 PP N3. I kind of assumed that the PP suffix was instead of the N* suffix.

All I want is a tyre!

Conti's are bloody awful in the wet, IMO. I lost the backend, going in a straight line, on the M6 in the wet. In fact I can't really use any of the first 3 gears in the wet (properly). Never had that problem with S03's.....
