Gents (and ladies)

I have a few quid coming my way, and quite fancy upgrading the wireless in the 996, along with a nice pair of exhaust tips and a good valet. Can't quite stretch to a Turbo just now, maybe next year!!

Anyway, I quite fancy one of these double DIN CD/DVD/iPOD players. Anyone had any experience of fitting one into the binnacle of a 996 (the two cubby holes at the bottom of the centre console? Look like it would fit no bother??

Also, would need some fine speakers, but want them to fit under the standard grills and be the same size.

Any recommendations or advice on who to ask to do this stuff - I also need the Sony CD changer taking (CAREFULLY!) out of the front.

Thanks!!!

Two questions ... Will you see the money you spend pimpin your radio-telegraphy device when you go to sell?
(DO you care??)
Are you hoping for a better sound from just changing the tips or is it purely cosmetic?

Do you realise I can't count?

I can get one of these puppies for £399 sheets, can always remove it when I sell and get a couple of hundred for it when I trade in next year - quite fancying that Turbo prices will drop when the 997 is out for a while...

I'm going for quad polished RUF tips which ze germans tell me will produce a deeper more bassy tone. They will also look fit!!

How are you mate, alright I hope.

Are you intersted in sound quality or flashing lights?

Seriously though, I had the top end Porsche system removed and a full custom sound system installed in the (Vesusius) 996, component speakers, amps, cassette / CD / tuner headunit. CD/MP3 changer / mP3 interface (actually an ogg interface) / ogg player

Probably more use and utility than some exhaust pipe ends?

We have fitted quite a few double din units into Porkas and they work very well and look pretty factory. The most recent one was in a Cayenne - will stick some pics up later.

The new Alpine IVA-W200Ri is the one to go for, especially if you have an iPod. Kenwood units are not quite as sexy IMHO, but the new Kenwood sat nav is a superb system (made by Garmin) as it is the first fitted in car system which allows you to add speed camera locations to it.

Sounds like you have your st in one sock alright!!
A pal of mine fitted 'cup' tips to his exhaust recently and I was surprised at how well they sounded , so you'll probably get a bang for your buck .

And ........ Thank you for asking , if I was any better I couldn't stick it!

(Except for h-h-h-having a h-h-h-hankerin for a french beer , and the smell of semi-burnt fumes!....)

My shit is always in one sock sah!

Koenig - a fair criticism - I'm slightly deaf due to being involved with the army at one stage (guns etc) so am looking for a good system but not a mobile Linn Sondek!!!!

Would be super cool to be able to use the ipod, maybe even have DVDs playing to stop the girlfirend bleating on long journeys. And yes, they do look cool

HUGHJAYTEENS - you have mail, friend. Would like to talk to you about an install.... Don't have crazy money to spend, want a good system for a decent outlay!! A double DIN head unit and some nice speakers which fit the factory hole (!)

Thanks

Vesuvius, consider this too

www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_detail.jsp?product_id=12205&taxonomy_id=10-20

Had a chat with hughjayteens and whilst he has yet to see it (think its quite new) it sounds the way to go - does the navi, the ipod, and has a blue tooth link so you can control your phone through it too, hard drive storage and loads of other stuff i cant even begin to understand...

Whoah!

Nice but I don't need the navi, and I want a permanet screen, not a single DIN motorised one.

Hugh is getting back to me with a quote for

1. Double DIN CD/DVD/Radio unit

2. Speaker upgrade (retaining original holes - would like some nice looking covers though.)

3. Removal of current Sony Head unit and changer

I'll let you know what he comes up with. Looks like he's done some AMAZING installs on some AMAZING cars!! He ain't Halfrauds, that's for sure

This one looks cool for £500.

The pioneer is a fixed screen... i think its motorized in that behind the screen is how you get data onto the hard drive, where the CD is etc, much like the kenwood flips down to reveal the CD drive

I need navi and a hands free kit, so this seems to fit the bill..

Vesuvius,

I will leave the Linn Sondeks in the house then!

I do wonder about all the gizmos on these ICE systems through - my general impression is that the more knobs buttons and special effects they put in, the room left for the sound producing bits gets stuck to a corner in the back! Especially the equalisation circuits that let you listen to Kylie in a monastery or a bathroom or whatever.

But I am a bit of a flat earther like that.

One big improvement is to replace the plastic tubed door speakers with some decent full range units. Mine are JL Audio ones.

On another point is it OK to have a DVD screen in the drivers line of sight? Wouldn't that be a bit distracting as you hurtle down the Autobahn at 174 mph?

Happy hunting?

Koenig

I agree. I once had a Nakamichi cassette (!) deck. looked like a piece of £5.99 rubbish but the sound was amazing.

Agree about the screen, but given I spend mucho time in traffic not moving anywhere.

Custom install and enclosures for JL behind stock door panels.

Fitted very well by The Sound Gallery in High Wycombe.

(They have two arms, one that can sell you a Linn Sondek, one that does hi end in car audio)

Sadly Becker only offer partial postcode entry so nowt you can do about that sadly.

Here is a piccy of the Alpine double din we fitted in a Cayenne recently:
