I have been lurking for many months and am now in a position to purchase my 1st Porsche and after a couple of E46 M3'S it has to be a 996.

I have found a nice 996 at Romans of St Albans which is a C4 with a nice spec for £37k with 33k on the clock.

Does this sound like an OK price and any one had any experience of Romans ?

I don't want to purchase from an OPC as after BMW I hate main stealers with a passion. Also really like the look of a C4S as well....decisions....decisions

All I can advise is don't be put off by RMS scare stories, don't dismiss the Tip without trying one & dont think because its 7+ years old it should not look brand new.

Depends what year, mileage, spec etc - let's have the details.

£37k can get a 3.6 these days....

2002 51 Reg PORSCHE 911 Carrera 4 Coupe, Manual 6 speed, Coupe, 33,000 miles, Quartz Grey, Black Leather, Sports seat, Bose, Factory Sat NAV, PSM, Xenon lights, FPSH, £36995

I believe this is the facelifted 3.6 model as the facelift came in at 01 51.

Looks an ok price to me, I've just bought an 02 C2 with less spec that the one you mention but also a bit less miles from an independant in Edinburgh and was a bit more expensive than the one you list (even after negotiating 2K off his sticker price). On his other stock he was pretty much asking high 30's for the 1st of the 51 facelifts with around 20-25K on the clock.

We do pay a little bit of a premium oop north so the one you mention with a little bit of negotiating sounds like an ok deal if it's a clean, straight one with full OPC.

if it's in excellent condition and has full OPC history I think that's a very good price...... enjoy.

Don't worry about OPC history after the 1st 3 years. Good independent services shouldn't be ignored. Often the car will be in better shape mechanically after a good independent has looked after it.

I will go and have a butchers then. Is it worth getting the 111 point check and OPC Warranty or just go 3rd party warranty or none at all and keep fingers crossed about the RMS.

get the 111 point check done and go with the Porsche warranty full stop. Remember, you don't have to go to an OPC for servicing in order to qualify for the Porcshe warranty. Just make sure they use OEM parts and the car is serviced at therecommended intervals and the recommended points are covered.

Spoke to Romans and going to have a look on Sat. They reckon it has had two services and is due one now.

They want to do it themselves but not keen to be honest....so I have two options. Pay full whack or close to and get an OPC service at 33k (Major ?) and check and warranty or take it as it is and get a good deal and then get it serviced and warrantied myself.

I am leaning towards the 1st as it saves me the hassle and would give me a sorted car with everything done for 37. Opinions ?

Watch out .. A '02 should have AT LEAST 3 stamps on it , and heading for it's 4th .. So the car does not have a full history. (Service is 12k or at least annually)

If you combine the 111 check with a full service the OPC will not charge you for the pre-warranty inspection.

Thanks for the pointers. I thought it was weird as well that there were only two stamps in the book. It seems it was done on mileage and not each year. Also will 33k or the 3rd service be a big one ?

If the car hasn't been serviced each year , it's not been looked after like it should have been .. My worry would be that this is going to show in other ways in the days and months AFTER you purchased it .. There's plenty of 996's around that have been looked after properly ..
Remember too , when you go to sell ,the gap will probably be pointed out to you by prospective buyers..

If the dealer told you it's got the full service .. Tread warily !!..

The major service is every 48k miles .. Best of luck ..

Went to look and what a load of s##te. It had scratches all over the drivers door, and rear bumper, front bumper was peppered and numberplate holder on the front was broken plus a wheel was corroded. The interior was scratched in places and the wheel and seats looked worn.

I walked away after a couple of mins but having looked in the showroom it seemed all cars were badly prepped and lacked wheel refurbs and paint. Anyhow the such continues. Cheers Matt

Don't worry.

There are some very nice 3.6 996s around for under £40k.

I personally prefer the C2 to the C4 and would want full OPCSH and Porsche Extended Warranty.
