Anyone cut down front No.plate plinth for shorter plate?
Discussion
Not sure what the plate plinth is like on a Boxster but I took mine off my 993 completely, and then screwed my short plate (legal font, size, spacing, etc) directly to the bumper using the captive plastic nuts that had originally secured the plinth. I did have to make some little wedge shaped spacers to sit between the plate and the bumper to get the plate at the right angle - didn't want to attract attention from the bib for having my number tilted towards the ground. Looks very nice, even if I say so myself!
At the 2004 Porsche Festival, I noticed that the then 993 Register Secretary's car had a front number plate shrunk to fit the size of the 993 backing plate. It looked good and he'd had no problems with it, so I followed suit - it looks much neater. Likewise I've had no problems in the last (almost) two years. Mine was made to size by Fancyplates (www.fancyplates.com/) at no extra cost, as far as I can recall. It isn't strictly legal, of course, but it would be churlish to point that out! Maybe I've just been lucky?
These are the current regulations for the display of number plates.

Certain imported cars can get away with smaller plates. I doubt whether you can with a UK supplied vehicle.

On my 996, I used fancyplates.com to manufacture a 3/4 size plate, removed the backing plate completely and drilled the holes in the new plate 1/4 inch wider than standard to keep the "bend" in the plate so that it matches the shape of the front PU. Like Gaity I used the captive holes in the PU to fix the plate and spaced it off the PU using the plastic washers from the black backing plate removed earlier. Does that make sense?
Looks great IMO.

cheers for ideas guys - I'm waiting for my plate from fancyplates...don't believe the next day delivery thing, as twice now i've waited over 2 weeks! Having it about 10mm narrower to fit the front better and 'slightly' moving the character...ends in LY which creates a big void if spaced correctly, and looks wrong - not sure if that will wash with the police, but not attracted their attention on the last car.
Thought about Gaity's approach, but saw one and it was tilting down, so decided to chop mine down with jigsaw and glued the ends back on the now about 10cm shorter plinth, so it looks right from the sides. Does look alot better and short rear plate seems to make the car look wider/more attractive in my opinion at least
Actually stuck the plates on with heavy-duty velcro which is amazing stuff, so if I ever decide to go to a police convention or MOT time, just rip it off and put on the std ones

stickers don’t trill me either. I'd like to mount my plate on the dash but apparently your not aloud to do that either
I really do fail to see why one needs a front plate. The identification argument doesn’t ring true because what about side views. Plus the Californian cops seem to manage with out
