I have a real concern regarding the amount of corrosion going on underneath the rear (exposed area) of my Turbo. My car is 2001 and done 38k, I have a few upgrades and i'm currently in process of slapping on new K24's, The corrosion was brought to my attention by the dealer about 5 Months ago (general service) stating the Oil Catch Tanks were porous and that the Turbos and Heatshields were badly corroded too! I had the car down at my local garage to pre-inspect car for K24 upgrade and the underneath is not looking good at all! The Headers look very rusted, the nuts holding the Headers on are completely disintegrated, (I'm talking falling off with my fingers!!!) The Turbos and actuators are falling to bits, the Heatshields are ready to fall off, the rear sump area looks bad with white oxidation around. The good news is that I have ordered up nearly new everything along with the K24 replacement, i.e. Bolts, Gaskets, Heatshields, etc, etc. It's bizarre that a car could look so mint but underneath it tells a different story! I have had the dreaded RMS done about a year ago and main dealer asked then do I live anywhere near the sea! (obviously noticed corrosion then!) I know there has been a lot of stories regarding Engine Blocks/Turbo Heatshields from others, i'm just starting to stress a little!

I have no warranty now as I have carried out a few mods and the car is 5/6 years old anyway, but should I mention these major issues with dealer (more concered about engine/sump area corrosion) also is there anything I can do to protect this area from anymore corrosion?

BTW If anyone has a spare set of stock headers kicking around let me know, I will take them off your hands (obviously buy them)

Well the alloy engine case should develop white corrosion, this is the way Alloy protects itself from totally corroding away, and the nuts ans shields sadly will disintegrate due to the enormous amount of heat they are subjected to during heat up/cool down cycles.

I'd be concerned about why on earth Oil tank/s are corroding though, certainly on the 911/964/993 series never heard of such a thing, although from memory they are made of brass on those cars.

Does that mean I can polish it up like one of Fred Dibnah's engines?

Sorry for the numptie question, but I thought RMS wasn't an issue with Turbos?

Lol if you want to polish it polish away!

Of course the fact it sits under the rear wing means A you won't see it and B it will be permanantly dirty!

Lol there's always one!

I hear those LED washer jets look really nice on 911's too

It isn't a numptie question, infact I would go to say it's a better response than any of the others that have replied, yip! we all have a laugh but I was looking for a serious response! anyways I heard that RMS was an issue on early Turbos. I will take some pics of the Turbos when they are taking off, unless they fall off first!

The RMS isn't an 'issue' as such on the turbo as the engine is based on the air cooled lump. I've done an RMS on my 993TT. It's just one of those things and not a design fault (hard hat on)

I believe the corrosion referred to on "oil tanks" relates the the small reservoirs under each turbo ? Completely exposed to ravages of a UK winter.

Cheers

Is this more to do with salting the roads??
(Sorry if this is obvious , We don't salt them over here..)

And does this mean the turbos are fecked??

The oil tanks (sumps) are replaceable seperately. One of my sumps has the pipe cross threaded so leaks slightly. I doubt yours are poreous.

Yip! I was referring to the drip tanks on the Turbo and these are porous, trust me I notice this with small drip marks of oil left in the driveway!

Guys! as I said I will take pics of the Turbos when they are removed, seriously! i'm just glad that i'm upgrading these k16's, they are falling apart.

My main concern was the sump area (around the drain plug) but if this is normal, it must be ok!

Is there anything that could be applied to help with corrosion or is it best left as is?

Leave it alone if it is alloy, if you try to clean it it will corrode away more, the white coating is protection that the metal forms.

sounds like a good excuse to get some performance headers to go with your new K24's.

Steve,

I am getting my heat shields done at the moment. One actually fell off my 996TT ( ‘02 with 60K miles) the underside on mine is clean in general. Some white corrosion that brushes off. Turbos are fine because the car is putting out 425 bhp on the same fuel + rolling road as I used 2 years ago and then it read 419 bhp – so engine is now nicely worn in.

Heat shields on my 993 turbo are just about gone. Will get them done at next service but I was told that the rear bumper has to come off to access /replace them. Is this true?

Bumper has to come off for the long one across the back. I did then when the engine was out for a clutch & stuff.
