996 tuning any idea`s please

I know many people go for major upgrades on their Porsches, but beyond exhaust & airfilter mods I believe you have to be careful with warranty & resale value. You can actually spend a lot of money modifying your car, only to find that is worth less than standard to the main purchaser, the Porsche franchise network. It is obviously a different case with older cars that are upgraded to a newer spec. but not with the relatively new 996. I have owned a pre-facelift 996 C2 (98) & a facelift C2 (02). The earlier car benefited greatly from an upgraded exhaust system, not so much in performance, but more the "interaction" with the car, it sounded fantastic !! Porsche recognised that the 996 was too quiet & modified the sound for the facelift model. So in summary, if you have a pre-facelift car it is well worth upgrading the exhaust (be carefull not get one that is too loud or boomy) beyond that when you want more grunt, save your
modification money & buy a facelift model, much of the extra layout will come back at re-sale time.

I think Grant has summed it up pretty well...As the owner of a facelift & having driven many 3.4 litre 996,you can notice the differenece.
These things come in a reasonable stae of tune from the factory.
The standard carrera now comes with 320 bhp...if you specify the X51 package from Porsche they will fit modified heads, more efficient inlet / exhaust manifolds a new, camshaft ECU & another front rad...this will releive you of £6644,and give you an extra whopping 25bhp....only thing is the the torque now comes further up the rev range!
If this is what Porsche can do as an example of bhp / cost, then I would stick to the exhaust & airfilter route.
To my mind the better tuning option is to save up for a 996 Turbo.

You can get the 996 power up from 300 to 335-340 without too much drama.
Exhaust headers, 100 Cell cats, upgraded air-filter, performance throttle-body, and a re-programmed ECU - that still maintains the standard vehicle's knock control.
The next step to push 355-360bhp is camshafts - but this is an engine out job and is obviously a lot more labour intensive.
A complete system (excluding camshafts) will cost around £4,400 + vat.
With these upgrades you have a 996 C2 that will put the later face-lift model to shame......
Give G-Force Motorsport a call, they've done a couple of these.
