Hello,

When I start up my 8 year old 996 from cold each morning the engine has started to make a tapping noise from cold. Once its warmed up its fine, any ideas what it could be?

Thanks,

Hi Its a slow tappet. you can rebuild the side that's tapping. you will need to replace all the tappets and the carriers.
Or just live with it.

It's quite normal I'm told .. The oils drained from the tappets , If the sound disappears within a min or two you're fine .. Mine does the same thing .

If you look at the engine bay from behind, on the left hand side, about half way up, there is a rubber bung next to an oilpipe. If you lift the bung you will see a connector with a USB style plug on it. Plug in your Amstrad and ask the question....why did I buy one of these?....

Hello Gentlemen,

I did own an immaculate 993 as one of my advisors told me it was the best 911 to go for, unfortunately it had a serious rms leak and just before one of my staff drove the 993 to the dealer here in London to fix the leak the engine blew up!

I have now sacked the advisor and have decided to buy the more reliable 996 as a run around, so far no leaks, I'm actually very impressed, I may buy up all the 996's in the country to give to my best sales staff.

Take care, and by the way, this really is the best forum I've come across, really great people, I wish you all the best.

Regards,

Sir Alan Sugar
