Some of you have wondered in previous threads how the new 997 GT3 compares on the track with the 996 GT3 RS (given that Porsche seems not to have released exact data for Ring times). The German magazine Sport Auto has just published an in-depth test of the 997 GT3 and states comparative data with the "old" 996 GT3 RS.

On the Nordschleife they go round in the new GT3 in 7.48 mins, vs. 7.47 for the 996 GT3 RS.
At Hockenheim, the new GT3 went round in 1.11,7 min, vs. 1.11,8 for the 996 GT3 RS.
In a 0 - 200 kmh - 0 start-brake test, the new GT3 took 18.6 secs, vs 18.2 secs for the 996 GT3 RS.
Both cars were tied re maximum lateral g : 1.30 g
No comparative data were stated for the wet weather track times, but according to the magazine, the new GT3 was their best car ever in the wet.

The 997 GT3 was on the (new) standard Michelin Pilot Sport Cups and it sounds like the 996 GT3 RS was on standard (Corsa ?) too

Why are they comparing the 997GT3 with the 996GT3 RS, why not the standard 996GT3.
The RS is totally track biased & fantastic for that use, but most of the motoring press have slagged it's on road drivability, it is simply too compromised for the road unless you are you have masochistic tendancies! The new 997GT3 is specifically designed as a road car first, if it is quicker than the RS on track it proves what a quantum leap Porsche have made in offering us the best of both worlds in one package!!!

The RS on proper R tyres does the ring in 7.40.

Not sure why anyone is worrying though, bugger all in it, which suggests the main innovation is on road comfort. Whatever floats your boat etc, but there is an appeal in the 'masochism'. I liked that the GT3 was the choice of a focussed driver, now any bugger will want one!

IMHO the 996 GT3 RS is a better road car than the 996 GT3 Mk1 or Mk 2 - I am always amazed how the journo's come to the conclusion that it isn't; believe me it is.
However I'm sure that the 997 moves the game on....
