996 Tech Question
Discussion
There are only 2 main fans, one on each radiator/condensor. When the a/c is switched on BOTH fans work on slow speed regardless of coolant temp (used to cool the condensors) when and if the engine temp gets well above 'normal' (forget the exact temp) then BOTH fans will increase to the faster (and noisier) speed. If a/c is off, same applies (ie 2 speed) but fans come on slow when just above 'normal' (in an effort to keep it at normal) and second stage if temp continues to rise. Hope this helps .. Engine bay fan will blow air IN when above a certain ambient air temp, this will continue to run for a peroid even after the ignition is off if hot enough...
Thats the info I was looking for thanks...
One of the fans isn't coming on .. It was brought to my attention when I was getting a condensor changed.
What's worrying is that I wouldn't have known the fan wasn't working .. The temp. gauge was within normal limits. The chances are (If I hadn't found out by chance) that I'd only become aware of one not working when the second one went.... And I'm told by my local indy that it's not unusual for a fan to break.
I wonder (idly) if double fan failures could be contributing (even in a small way) to engine breakage through overheating....
I'm reluctant to mention all this as there is enough anti-996 talk here as it is, but I'd also hate to think there could be a few of you out there with just one fan working, heading to a track day , for example.....

Engine breakage? You mean the dreaded RMS? One of the fans isn't coming on .. It was brought to my attention when I was getting a condensor changed.

Well it must have been at least a week since we had the last mention

If you car is moving above 5-10 mph then there are no need for ANY fans - airflow will be more than ample. 3rd Rad is VERY small area has no active cooling (fan) - therefore only good for when you're on the move. IMO this just adds weight to the front and another (very) unprotected spot for stones to split your rads. I track my car with just the two rads and temps keep well within specs - perhaps if it 100 Degree plus out there then the 3rd Rad would knock 1-2 Degrees off the returning coolant temp but in the UK - not an issue IMO. On your note about 'warnings' - I'm sure that if both fans failed, a flashing temp light would come on your dash - not 100% on this though.

As an aside , I'm thinking of putting protective grilles in front of the two rads .. Good/Bad idea?? ..
The only con I can think of is the possibility of reduced cooling.

No loss of cooling in my case. I had it done because I had a stone through the centre rad. A bit "horse bolted and door closed" I know but that's life.
My local indy fabricated them from stainless mesh and not only are they practical but they give an understated agressive look to the front. Pity your all the way over in Dublin or you could have got them done with him.
