Early 996 buying advice...
Discussion
Just after some advice on possibly looking at an early 996. I'm looking to change cars at present and was looking at the 'sensible' option of a BMW 330d! Then a friend of mine tells me he's thinking of selling his 996. It's a '98 S plate so one of the first of the 996's I'd imagine. Silver, black leather, I think it has the 18" turbo wheels and has the sports suspension fitted. Mileage is somewhere around the 30k mark. It's not used that often now at all as it's a second car. Full service history though how much of that is Porsche and how much is independent I'm not sure. But he's always maintained just as it should have been. I think he's looking for £25k for it.
So here are my questions! Is that a fair price for it? I understand if I took it to Porsche and paid for a full inspection that I would then be able to add a Porsche warranty onto it? I think I'd seriously consider this for piece of mind but is that only available up to a certain age? I've heard the sports suspension can be very hard/harsh? Also, and here's a pretty key point, depreciation. I think I'd probably only look to keep the car for say 12-18 months and then change. How much would you expect values to drop in that time? Do you think it could fall below the 20k mark?
Any thoughts and advice is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Dan.

I'd say that sounds pretty good if the inspection shows up no (major) problems. Silver with black and the sports exhaust/susp will make it an easy car to sell on too so wouldn't expect depreciation to be a problem although it may take a hit once it falls beyond the 10 year warranty limit.
Either way, it can't lose more than a new(ish) BMW and which would you rather drive (though you'l probably spend the depreciation savings at the petrol station!).

Loads of info about these already on here, as I'm sure you're aware.
You might only get a year's warranty out of it, can't add it when it's gone past it's 9th birthday. Shouldn't be an issue if you're only keeping it a year.
Think prices are heading to early £20k's if they're not already there. Then, who knows?
Love mine.

It sounds a good deal as long as it is in good condition, just because it has only 30K on the clock, it has to be in good nick.
DO NOT & I mean DO NOT run away form a perfectly good car, due to scare stories about early 996. these stories are the only reason prices will drop when cars reach 10 years old.
The 996 is a great intro into porsche as it is very fast but also very user frendly.
You will enjoy it much more than a bmw.

It's 40k miles Gary. I thought the price was about the going rate for that model from looking on here? Didn't think it was particularly cheap? Perhaps I should really consider this seriously if it is! My friend has owned it for the last few years now so I know the car's well looked after.
What are the running costs like? Current car is an Impreza Turbo so I doubt the mpg will be much worse than that if at all? What about service intervals and general servicing costs? Would probably use a good indy rather than main dealer I'd have thought.
