Does anybody have any advice for DIY pad and disk change?

I have bought Alcons and RS29's and the car is on standard steels at the mo. I have just removed a front caliper and,

Am i okay letting the caliper hang down while i change the disk? (feels heavy)
Do people do away with the pad wear sensors?
Are the 2 screws holding the disk to the hub opposite thread?
Are the alcons larger than the standard disk? thus needing to fit longer bolts and washers.

Figure it cant be too hard!

thanks in advance

Barry.

1. NO ! - Hang it via a bungie / string from the suspension spring - letting it hang will destroy the rubber pipe !
2. No issues here - you just need to maintain continuity otherwise you'll get a brake light. Tie them back well out the way of everything.
3. Nope - when you fit the new discs, put a bit of copper grease on the theads of the retaining screws to ease their release next time (they do nothing but hold the disc in place, the wheel bolts hold it all together).
4. You should be fitting new 'Blue' bolts anyway (Bolts with locite on them) - If the discs are larger than normal then surely you need the correct size calipar/hub or a proper fixing kit ? Putting washers in sounds a recepie for disaster IMO !

Hope this helps ...

Just to add - Calipar bolts are torqued to 63 ft/lbs. (85 Nm) - 'Tight' will not do - these are your brakes we are talking about ...

Barry,
If the Alcons are the Gen2 JZ Alcons, the discs are 10mm bigger than before. ie, they are 360mm, not 350mm as before. However, the increased diameter are completely compatible with the Mk2/RS 6 pot calipers (I have them fitted on my Mk1). If they are the JZ items, you may want to give Steve McHale a quick call if there are any installation issues.

If Alcons are the MK1 rattlers then they will be very tight to get on. There is a technique where you press them on. For details speak to Steve McHale or email me and I will tell you how I did it. The wheel bolts don't need to be any longer and neither do the bolts that hold the calipers on. Whilst Porsche recommend using new caliper bolts I have found in many years of ownership that they can be re-used without any problems. Just torque them properly and use some loctite.

Talk to JZM if I were you, they gave me great instructions. You need the right threadlock + allyslip ideally.

Pretty sure you can let the calliper hang (check with Steve though, but I'm sure he said it was ok). If you have the newest alcons, there are spacers you need for the front calliper, can't remember if it has new bolts or not to compensate, but I think they do. I fitted mine a few months ago so it's getting hazy...

Are you replacing ceramics at the rear? If so getting the rotors off the hats is a right bugger!

Cheers all..

The disks are the generation two, i bought them a month or so ago from JZM but have only just got around to having ago fitting them.

The disks at present are steel not ceramic, can't get over how heavy the replacement disks are and how heavy the calipers are once removed!

Has anybody struggled with the little screws that hold the disk onto the hub?

Cheers

Just finished the brakes, not really that hard tbh.

Cleaned the wheels up while they where of and managed to get some new tyres fitted, loads of cracks on the rims which i now a few of you lot are trying to complain about so i will try to post pics of them later.

Fitted the wear sensors on the front in the end but on the rear pads the RS29's dont have the notch to fit them.

Thanks again

Expect the brake warning light to come on even though you'll have plenty of pad left...

If you've got pics and you want to raise it with Porsche then send me an email and I'll forward you the chaps email address to send them to. The more pics the more chance I reckon. Saw the man in question at goodwood today
