After spotting a gorgeous black gt3 I finally got around to talking figures and test driving. They loved my turbo at the main dealer and we spoke of a fairly reasonably deal before the test drive, so out we went.

Well, all I can say is that I'm a little disappointed. It went alright when you really caned it but I've got used to such a load of mid range torque in the turbo that I really found it lacking in the engine department. Overtaking seemed quite a long winded affair in 4th at about 60 wheras the turbo would have gone off like a rocket, I guess I needed 3rd for proper acceleration.

It felt a little edgy on the road and quite different in corners and I guess my 1/2 hour test drive on roads I didn't know didn't do it justice. What I do know is when I got back in the turbo I went around a big roundabout over the M11 roughly 100 times faster than I felt comfortable with in the gt3, and got mid-corner drive from God himself.

All in all, I don't really think I can improve on the turbo as a road car.

That GT3 looks the absolute t1ts though, and sounds sweet as well. Is it something that one gets used to over time? I mean you GT3 guys rave about them so much that I really feel like I've missed the point a bit.

No doubt turbo is the better package for the road. Take it to the track and you'll see what all the fuss is about with the GT3. Whilst the turbo wallows round the bendy bits like a drunken whale the "3" will cut through apexes like a scalpel.

You pays your money and you take your choice

Careful Supermono.Dodgy area criticizing a Gt3..but i totally agree...hence i sold the gt3 and bought a tt..on the road the tt has few rivals on a track probably the gt3 has few rivals..but we are talking road cars here arent we?I best brace myself for the usual onslaught now.

60 mph in 4th? Yes, you've missed the point. It's a race engine and need revs to go. Nervous handling is usually a sign of poor set up. Perhaps you should grab a ride with someone who knows how to drive his GT3 and you'll see what it's all about (particularly at the 'ring) but it perhaps isn't for you.

Well like I said a half hour test drive didn't give me that much time to get used to it, I was surprised though by how little midrange it had even considering its 8krpm screaming race engine.

Of course, when revved it was sweet, but I think even when I'm tear arsing around fast sweepy roads I wouldn't want to keep stirring the old gearbox quite that much.

It'd definitely be interesting to be taken out by someone who knows what they're doing. I suppose that's the attraction of the turbo for me: I'm not exactly Nigel Mansell yet I still seem able to hustle the thing around quite well.

was it a mk 1 or mk2?

the mk2 has a lot more mid range after driving both.

the mk1 needs breathing and pipes and then she will really fly.
TT has bags of torque and is more of a road car for sure. depends on what you like really.

GT3 on track is awesome plus it is a lot more engaging and nevervous. TTs drive themselves and compliment the driver in a big way. the GT3 demands respect.

TT is an awesome road car and if you only use it for road application then stick with the TT i reckon!

hey i went through the same thing after owning 2 turbos went to a gt3 and for the 1st few days thought id made a big mistake as you can see from the thread below the pic. now tho i totally wouldnt go back...the response of the engine and the handling are just electric, the noise is fantastic and it has this kind of unbreakable race car feel to it. but on a one hour test it wont shine through, took me a week to appreciate!!

Don't take this the wrong way my friend but I don't think you're ever going to get the GT3 thing.

Sounds to me you're in the right car - nothing to say one is better than the other; they're just different.

Enjoy all that forced induction & all round traction, give us GT3 guys a wave as you pass &, if we don't wave back, remember its because we've got our hands full

I think the above says it all. As Clapham said, maybe the GT3 isn't for you................................

What you really need is a 997 Turbo.......................Tiptronic obviously (cos it's quicker than a manual ) Without wishing to sound rude but I'm not really sure why you went to look at a GT3, they ain't quiet they ain't comfortable, they certainly don't "drive themselves" most definately a case of you only get out what you put in from a driving perspective)

Once again a a rubbish 'im a super-hero comment',why hang on to a unruly slow car so you can tell everyone how clever you are..Fact is a gt3 is an unsorted poorly behaved road car and a turbo is a bloody quick road car full stop...Supermono went to look at a gt3 coz so many tossers on this website said it was the brilliant...The only good thing is he didnt waste 10k finding out like i did..

Its bit of a gag to be fair, but the Gt3 boys crack me up...Fact is they are not road quick, they disappoint if you want REAL shocking grunt and they are a pain in the @rse most of the time,IMo as en ex-owner of course of a gt3....GT2's are the nuts as well but most of them have had 6 owners at 5 years old ...any reason for that?

woo and indeed hoo!!

I picked up my Mk1 GT3 yesterday (WHAT a day for it!)

First ever Porsche and one hell of an introduction. I'd had a couple of test drives before I picked it up but hadn't keyed into it properly - However I had tasted the potential so went for it (after trying a TT too which was awesome but GT3 suits my current desires more).

Picked it up at midday and by mid afternoon I was in awe of my new toy. That thing is a weapon. SO sharp, SO accurate, SO involving. The faster you go the better it gets. It's all a bit fluffy and torque-less at low revs but when it's wound up... wow!

I took my mate out for a blast when I got back up to Newcastle on some nice roads I know. Found myself backing off on the straights massively for fear of doing truly daft speeds down them after being catapulted out of the bends and thrown down the road by the howling devil that is living in the back of my car. I've never driven something that responsive, that well suspended, with so much feedback! My mate got out looking a bit shocked (don't think he was expecting what he experienced - noise, handling etc)and just said "WANT ONE!"

Obviously in my honeymoon period and can't wait to learn how to truly get the most out of the car (slow (ish!) in to avoid pushing the front and then early on the power seems to work pretty well so far - hints and tips welcome!) but i've been day-dreaming of getting back in it all day.

My girlfriend dropped it off at the OPC for the 111 point warranty check today (must have been amusing seeing a blonde girl in a GT3 with the buckets pulled right up to the wheel crawling along in rush hour traffic!) and I can't wait to get it back.

I hope you love the car as much as i did when i bought mine....all i will say is most of the things you enjoyed about the car..straight line speed, impressing your mate etc would be double in a tt..plus the missus could drive down the road in comfort with the bose blasting out and the sunroof open.

My girlfriend read your post over my shoulder and said you sound 'v.old' also reckoned if I ever choose a TT over a GT3 she'll buy me some string back driving gloves - and yes, she's driven them all.

I am old...too old to believe 'sports car hype' thats what experience is all about..to access 420 pounds of torque from 2700-5000 needs string back gloves...dont you find the gt3 harnesses a pain in waitrose car park?
