Anyone else read the 997 Turbo, Carrera GT & Mitsub EVO 9 shootout yet ?
Having read the whole article three times now I'm a bit confused why he was unhappy with the handling of the 997, having seen the video of the 997 Turbo, obviously driven by a test driver :
http://video.google.com/videoplay?doc
I don't get why he didn't try again & again to get closer to the GT time, if you weren't satisfied surely you would try again, I suppose the whole point was to show that you can get performance close to that of the Porsche for £30k but I am gutted he wasn't that happy with it.
I would prefer the new GT3 myself and that is my choice before anyone (KAYC) starts !
just a bit upset as ever since I saw that video of the Turbo I have been swayed to the darkside of 4wd.
Sorry to go on but the new 997 turbo IS a big deal which is why the guy was excited about driving it, also gutted the 9 was close to the turbo acceleration times !

Was a nice read yes, enjoyed the Lambo, Bentley, 997 Turbo group test too. Never liked the old man look of the turbo or 4wd but like the 997 so a bit put out, nevermind.
They do say that a sorted EVO is the best point to point car but, "Porsche there is no substitute""
Should have thrown is a 997 GT3 for good measure although the 997 Turbo was only 3 tenths quicker around the track than the GT3 RS (996)was from memory.
TOP GEAR will be interesting when it returns to test them both (hopefully)

What image is that then ?
I agree on interior, I sat in mine for the first time and though where is the money being spent, then i drove it and thought, on the engineering !
Also agree on the Scooby front having driven the only white p1 alive, that was stupid quick with very little lag but when it started all hell broke loose !
The image of that one wasn't great ! What is it about Porsche's guys ?

For 99% of drivers the 997 Turbo would be no quicker on a B road than the Evo

Very true. In fact I recon for 99% of all drivers 50% of all cars whatever make will be just as fast.
To be honest you can have the quickest, most poweful car going, but it depends on how much the driver wants to push it and himself.
Ive had a big diesel discoveries keep up with me in my 996tt on the country lanes, not becasue Im slow or he is fast but thats all you could safely do on the roads no matter what car you are in.
Ive had vans overtake me on the mway, not as I was slow but I didnt want to get intro trouble for doing more than 85.
The problems the guy was having wrestling with the Turbo was on the test track not the road, I brought the subject up because the Turbo vs GT3 Road vs Track has been done to death. I was hoping that the new turbo may have been able to get a little closer to the GT on track as it was only 5 to 6 mph down on the GT through their speed trap.
I certainly wouldn't drive my car fast on the road's in any conditions but that's because I am a lightweight.

Actually thats why a lot of us buy GT3s. Because you can't really tap any of these cars potentials on the road, so may as well just get something sorted for the environment where you can. Of couse that doesn't hold much water for a daily driver. I'd rather have an obnoxious 4x4 if I needed a daily driver though

Interesting because I did come up against a trick EVO, on the straights the 996TT monstered the Evo, but the evo was better than the Turbo on the tight stuff. Of course on the road neither would get away from the other, simply because you can't safely use their full pace over any distance!
Haven't opened my Evo yet so not sure exaclty what their slant is, but here are a few random thoughts...
I've never driven an Evo, but have owned the other two. No doubting that the GT is an incredible car, and at least sounds like it means business, unlike any other non-sports exhaust Porsche. It is, however, about as suitable for the real world as Zsa Zsa Gabor. That's not because of the clutch (no idea why people get obsessed with this), but more importantly that it bottoms out too frequently (understatement). Other than that and being a left hooker, what is there NOT to love about the GT?
As many here have remarked the Turbo is almost too tame but does everything brilliantly EXCEPT - arguably - provide the X Factor. No one is seriously going to choose between having these cars, they all do very different things and send very different messages to the outside world.
I only tracked the GT once, and then it all made sense - it was a different world from anything else. Not tracked the 997 Turbo yet, but lets face it we all know it will feel like a v v v quick road car.

I had an evo and they are awesome cars,so well sorted on the road they make a 996tt feel ungainly, imo of course.they do lack puff in a straight line compared to a tt so i thought the article stated that well..one of my reasons for arguing with the gt3 guys who complain about the failsafe and computer controlled handling of a tt is that its not true....a tt pushed reasonably hard still shows very traditional Porsche handling characteristics and takes concentration...the evo you just boot it and steer which makes them very quick on road use.I've never driven an Evo, but have owned the other two. I was puzzled by the timing graphs of the laps. The GT crossed the start line at about 105mph. The evo at 100 whilst the 997TT crept over at 85. However by the end of the lap (same place as the start presumably!)TT and the GT were doing 100+ and the evo 95. Surely if the TT had originally crossed the start line at 100 instead of 85 it would have posted a better time?
