Chaps,

A hypothetical question, I am very happy with the car I have, have only owned it for 3 months and tend to keep cars for 4-5 years (and often more) ...

... but I own a 944 S2, and am realising that it's not perhaps *as* quick as I'd like to think. I have actually very little experience of really powerful waggons, and have never experienced a 911 (sat in one, but only when stationery.) However, I have been quite bitten by the Porsche bug with the 944, so what sort of thing would folks think of as a suitable Porsche to move onto from an S2?

(As an aside, I happen to greatly prefer the 993 shape to the 996, which I am not that fond of at all. I expect flaming for this comment, BTW!)

As I said, it's hypothetical, as I really like what I have, but it doesn't stop me from musing ....

Sounds to me if you're asking the `hypothetical` question after 3 months maybe you're not as content with it as you might....

In 4/5 years time - assuming you paid about 6-7 for an S2 and want to pay the same for your next car - maybe a Boxster?

Alternatively if your car budget has gone up, you want to get yourself into a 911 of some description. I'd always go for a GT3/RS variant myself but a nice 993 C2 would be provide the good step on from a S2 you want.

Having said that, no doubt they'll have gone up and up in value and will be worth more than a 996 TT so get one of them!

It starts with a 993C2, then a 993 RS and then financial ruin/993 GT2

Which particular aspects of our respective worlds overlap, Nervy? Couple of eyes, nose, usual other bodily parts? Check. Male, English? Check. Porsche enthusiasts? Check. You have admitted to having an S2 as a loan car, and enjoying it, but that was on loan while your waggon was being worked on. Ah, maybe that's what you are getting at, you prefer 993's to 996's, maybe?

Also, I'm a little lost. (Maybe that's another similarity between me and ol' Nerv.) TT is a turbo. What's an X50? And a C2? I get the impression that the GT2's and GT3's (what's the difference?) are the hard-core, normally-aspirated track machines, but what's an RS (thought they were nasty Fords), and a Carrera 4, and a Targa (or is this just a body style?)

And someone I know has just bought a 996 C2 soft-top (cringe - sure I have mis-named it). What's one of these then? (And is it quicker than my S2 - almost certainly so, I'm guessing.)

Sorry for being so thick here.

You throw F&*& loads of cash it to make it go "a little" bit quicker then wake up one morning that if you'd have saved what you spent on it and just sold it you could have had a 911!!

Two options for you if you like the 993. Either supercharge your 944 (still great handling, proper power, having a unique car to your requirements), or get a 993 and then soup it up. A standard 993 is quicker than a 944 but it's not absolute quick by today's standards - you'll get roasted by suits in M3s on the motorway.

As you'd guess I love the 993, but if your reason for straying from the 944 is speed, then you'd best be looking at the faster variants of the 993 or you'll hit the exact same dilemma a few months later!!!

And getting proper power out of a 993 costs more than supercharging a 944 or tweaking a 944 turbo.

It'll be fun whichever one you choose!

I think you would be diappointed by the difference between a 993 and your S2 WRT to speed, it does not feel that much quicker

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering.

Actually, I'm pretty satisfied at the moment. In fact, looking at the time, I think I'll go to the local greasy spoon and get myself a lardy bacon-and-fried-egg sarnie, on very thick sliced bread, for lunch. Then I'll be very satisfied.

Can I get you one while I am there? I am concerned about your perpetually dissatisfied nature, old chum, and this may help out.

I sort of know how you feel, Oli – my 968 is a lovely steer, but not that fast. Generally, due to the crowded state of the roads down here in the Saaarf East, straight line speed isn’t that relevant; and the car has enough overtaking punch for most situations. It’s the handling in the twisties that gets me every time.

I disagree with the chap that said that the 993 isn’t significantly quicker than the 944; it is. My best friend has a (non Varioram), early 993 C2 and it is considerably quicker than my 968 of the same 1993 vintage. When I finally crave more power in a couple of years’ time, I shall probably go the 993 cabriolet route, or supercharge the 968 (both will cost about the same in terms of ‘upgrade money’.

Not much out there that can stay with a supercharged 968 putting out just shy of 400bhp. However, the relevance of such straight line performance on today’s roads is debateable…

The last 993 I drove (an early '94) felt no faster than my S2 (*). It didn't feel exactly slow either, but I expected something quite much faster. Left me with the exact same feeling as the 968 - maybe I have a problem with 6 speed gearboxes ... and then I must admit that fitting a MAF to my S2 has greatly improved throttle response and torque all over the rev range.

So is an early 993 worth more than twice the price of a 944 S2 ? - sorry, can't even be bothered to reply to this one.

Try a 928 S4 or a modified late 944 turbo. Money-wise (and also performance-wise if you decide to fit modern dampers) you'll get definitely more car than a 993.

Oli, you've said a few times your s2 feels slow, I can only sumise that given you you were used to the wild ride that is a stock Mk2 8v Golf slug, that yr S2 is fooked mate, as they are not mental rocketship fast of course, but its in a whole difernet league to an old 8v Golf. Get on either vixpys or weltmeisters rollers & see whats shes got.

Onwards from S2, all depends on budget & do you want 911 etc? big step up in budget to 993 etc tho unless you want a tatty old SC or something. A modded 250 Turbo is a big step on, & given a sorted chip & wastegate re-build & suspension renew, a 944T is more than capable of giving a GT3 a hard time I can't see you being disapointed. 968 maybe another way forward, not actually much quicker then S2, but in decnet guise of sport/Cs or esp mo30 CS they do feel it. Still strong money for what they are tho.

When I bought my S2 I meet a guy called Andy who lives in home town in berkshire. He races a 944 in some sort of porsche group b class (I think) He told me when you have a car like an S2 you should spent "time" makeing yourself faster (become a better driver) than money trying to make the car faster. Its all about speed thru the corners.
In the biking world its kinda well known a top rider on a standard 500cc road bike could beat a joe average rider on a shiney new 1000cc sportsbike around a track.

I've had three Porsches now. 944 Lux 2.5 for 18 months, 944 S2 for 4 years then just had to have a 911. Didn't want to risk a 964 so got a 993 C4 ('96 varioram) - truly immense car and hugely quicker than a 944 S2.
I'd say get the newest and best 993 you can afford - you'll not regret it one bit. I've had it 5 years now.
