A few years ago I looked for a 964, after looking at some and reading some posts on forums decided against one, owning a Porsche became out of reach but never stopped me looking, I have now started looking at 993's but have noticed 996's coming down to 993 level so have switched my research to a 996 model.

So, if this has been asked before can anyone can point me to a site or post on 'what to look for' when buying a 996.
Engines, read a few horror stories but I suppose posts are made when there is a problem but is the 996 a more reliable motor than the 993.
These warranties, read they cost around £700 per year, does this cover a full engine rebuild.
Servicing costs seem reasonable, whats your most expensive service?
Thanks

I must have one.
Any info appreciated.

...Porsche don't DO rebuids/repairs - so if you have the Porsche Extended Warranty, and the engine goes bang (and it's not your fault) - then new engine.

993 engines have their issues too, but I think the reason you hear more about the 996 engine problems is that there are thousands more 996's around than 993's (you see - the 993 was only ever meant to be a temporary 'stop-gap' between the 964 and the modern, sleek, efficient 996)!

My '99 996 C4 tip has one over 100k miles with no significant problems - but I've just extended the warranty again, anyway.

Warranties - so whatever I buy it has to have had the warranty extended to continue it?
I thought these warranties were an independent warranty.
Obviously I have no idea on this so if someone can put me in the picture.

edited to add - still waiting for my search to come up, I will trawl my way through the pages.

If the warranty has expired you can pay for an inspection circa £200, rectify any faults found, then you can add the OPC warranty.

If you're buying privately use the inspection as a bargaining tool.

but remember the OPC will ALWAYS tell you the disks are shot, even if you had them replaced recently its in the OPC service sales tips and techniques handbook.

My most expensive service was £1300 btw.

Surprised Ric let the 993 comment go, maybe it's because he's on a promise.

Mine are defo. on the way out and no mention from OPC East London. Those guys tend to be very straight up.

they told me they needed changing soon this was around august last year, local specialist said they have at least 5k if not more in them, went again to opc about 2k miles later, said the same, disks all round, went back about 6 months after, for another service and the same guy who told me twice they needed doing said they where fine. . . .

I finally had them all replaced about 2 weeks ago 12k miles after they originally said they needed sorting.

The warranty that OPC's sell is administered by Porsche UK, so it's a manufacturers warranty. Costs about £725 to renew but nowadays doesn't cover half as much as it used to in the good old days. However, it does cover most of the major items like engine, gearbox, drivetrain etc etc and is definitely worth having, well for my GT3 I think it's a must.
