Why does everyone think the Cayman S is slow???
Discussion
From the earlier thread on 994T vs Cayman S, being the sad car nut I am I found the original performance figures for the 944Turbo(250bhp,did own one many years ago)! Thought the performance figures were enlightening as the Cayman is actually quicker than every 911 (+ 944, 928) prior to the 996 series with the exception of RS & Turbo BLIMEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
I thought it was worthy of a seperate post if only to show how things have moved on!
944Turbo(220bhp) 0-100 - 16.2 secs 0-130 - 31.8 Maximum 158mph
944TurboSE 0-100 - 14.2 secs 0-130 - 26.7 Maximum 154mph
Cayman S 0-100 - 12 secs 0-130 - 21.9 Max 171mph
Actually whilst we are talking iconic older Pork
A 928 GT (320bhp manual) 0-130 - 23.5
A 911 Carrera Club sport 0-130 - 25.4
A 964 Carrera 2 0-130 - 23.7
A 964 RS took 0-130 - 21.8
A 993 Carrera (94 pre-vario-ram) 0-130 - 24.1
A 993 Carrera varia ram targa 0-130 - 23
A 996 C2 0-130 - 17.4 (suspiciously fast!)
A 997 C2S 0-130 - 18.7
(all Autocar figures)

Yeah, that has got to be bollox.
Anyway, it's all abit academic. Some things are faster on real roads (poorly surfaced B roads etc) which is where Cayman Ss can really poo over 964RSs.
If you want to do 0-130 really quickly, an Ultima GTR does OK for the cost of a new GT3.
Can't remember what the exact figure is, but 0-143mph quarter mile is 9.9 secs...
I think the Cayman S is an incredibly quick motor car, 0-100 in 12 seconds is fast enough for any sane person, why would anyone want to go quicker, if God had intended a human being to travel faster we would have all evolved wings or three legs by now etc etc........
thats about as quick as my AMV8V

Tell you what!
The first thread on that link, the stand out car for the money is the S2000!
I have to say that I do love mine - makes me smile often. Perhaps that's why it has to be something special to replace it.
I'm thinking more GT3 every day. Give it a year or so of owning one.... then what - where do you go next?
Btw - Gary - I've never put down any 996 - I've never driven one so I know I wouldn't be qualified to comment - I'm going on the advice of this place. Also a few track days where the little Honda has done itself proud against those fine cars - probably a driver thing

I reckon alot of the old v's new speed comparison thing, comes down to perception of speed. The Cayman S is a very composed car, and so feels like it could do with a few more horses....It is, of course, a fast car. Compare to a 3.0 litre Turbo of old, frantic delivery, tea trolley handling (relatively speaking of course), where 100mph would feel the same as the Cayman at 150+.
Just my thoughts...
Just my thoughts...

The Cayman is clearly not a slow car but as mbutchers says feels like it needs more grunt as the chassis and brakes are so good.It falls into that dangerous trap of not needing to be respected coz it wont catch you out and therefore you tend to drive hard everywhere..similar to the 4s in that respect that i had. Also when talking about the performance of the Cayman relative to older Porsches we have to take into consideration how far other car manafacturers have come on in the same timeframe...a 944 turbo for example was a very quick car in its day compared to most things other than top end exotica...cayman to be fair is humbled by a fair few saloon cars now...imho of course.

You are right: it does feel like it could do with more, but I think it would only be truly humbled in a straight drag race against the likes of the quickest AMG Mercs and M-series beemers if we are talking saloon cars. As Luca says, there are a number of "ordinary" cars out there with crazy power outputs (I suspect he was obliquely referring to Mercs rather than the likes of the M5, which is not ordinary in my book).
On real world roads (ie with bends and bumps), the Cayman is about as quick as anything, so I do find it frustrating that people like to compare bald performance figures. I am constantly dumbfounded when I hear comparisons between high performance and "ultra" high performance cars in real world conditions. In order to detect significant performance differences away from the track, the protagonists would have to be doing around 130mph. And as for on track, I have found the Cayman to be highly competent - it certainly showed a few 911 drivers a clean pair of heels.
Answering the original question, it is certainly not slow...
