Highway: YES!
I've been thinking of a "Boxster Boys" (Alliterative purposes only - girls welcome) run at some point in the spring. I guess since this is your first post you are new to Pistonheads. PH has a very active community which does many runs, days out and so on during the season....and even not. I'be just been out on a great day out down in Dorset.
Generally the runs are open to anyone from PH - whatever marque of car they drive. There IS a precedent though for a specific model meet - the Virginia Water meets started off as meets for the TVR 'S' group.
I think it should be quite possible to generate enough interest in a Boxster run - although in PH spirit other models and marques should be allowed to join in - if not in the Boxster Photo of course!

Hows next Sunday morning sound then? 9.00am meet (I know its early but you avoid traffic) I have the route to-Guildford way to Haling Island-all good roads. Post here if interested in coming. If theres enough interest I will post the route in full.
The only thing to put me off will be rain/ice. Boxsters (any variant) only tho!

I know the road you mean...through Selborne? Unfortunately I cannot do next Sunday (wife's birthday!). Why not try arranging something with a bit more notice. Generally four or five weeks is enough....
Just a quick note to remind people that runs should be checked off with Ted first, or should be strictly treated as private non-PistonHead events.... ie no-one can stop you guys getting together, it's a free country etc. Just make sure it isn't in Ted's name ("not in my name"
) if he doesn't know about it.
There have been a couple of incidents already on convoy drives or runs, including one that I organised strictly off list where I scared a badger or two
At Virginia Water recently, there was an incident involving a Cerbera. These are not isolated occasions, and the TVR forum has had an eventful Surrey run before now. I am also aware of other car groups where convoy drives have gone wrong, ie one Elise list on another forum had to stop their runs after a serious accident.
Besides the normal red mist element, often there are worries about navigation to a second meeting point, losing people behind you at roundabouts, attracting too much attention from other motorists or the police... plus an element of showing off / or intermarque competition if different types of car are involved. That said, they can be damn good fun when they go right
Soooo, please...
1) Check it with Ted if there is even the remotest PistonHeads association.
2) Be very, very careful and don't do anything silly - like wot I did
if you are going to 'go it alone'.
3) Wait with baited breath for officially organised PistonHeads events, that may or may not include a driving element in the future, OR...
4) ...attend a professionally organised track or airfield day, where you can meet up with fellow PHers and drive on the safety of closed roads. MauriceC2S organised a very successful event last weekend, apparently, where Daz could stretch the legs of his 996TT to 180mph without a huge risk of licence or life being lost.
All the best,

Quite right, Dom. Very valid points.
Are there to be "official" PH runs in the future, then? It takes a group where booking is essential (i.e. money up front) to be able obtain an airfield or track. It also requires *insurance* (on a number of fronts). Not something any "unofficial" run could have...so I'd really welcome some "official" outings!
Doing a scenic drive, of course, does not require anything but road insurance...but I think its somewhat important to stress the scenic nature of any runs and do everything possible to stress to participants that it is simply a drive in the country...
Bob's excellent "Dorset Dawdle" was excellent fun - and no-one (to my knowledge) made progress at anything other than a safe and reasonable pace. (I can't comment on whether speed limits were adhered to completely - but nothing made me nervous!).
There is a question for madcop here too....is there any legal implication to travelling together in a convoy of more than two or three cars? I read something in TVRCC Sprint about this but can't remember where the problem lies if at all...

Hi Don,
Hmmm, not sure there are driving events planned for PH in the near future (Ted isn't too keen as of yet, but we're working on him
), and I don't want to discourage your excellent Basingstoke events - they were quite rightly two out of the few to be nominated in best PH event at BTaP... never has such organisation been so fruitful
However, following Virginia Water and Ted's comments about it, I felt the urge to remind people that there is a fine line between people enjoying their cars on great roads (the scenic route!), and people using it as an excuse for an impromptu gumball rally (the root of all evil for us and Ted).
No comment has previously been necessary, yet at VW I experienced the first 'boy racer' pebbledashing racing start in the car park and the first nasty incident at an official meet. Just a little too close to the antics of the Maccy D's car park crew... let's keep our baseball caps pointing in the right direction

Yes, this has been a hot topic in the TVRCC.
Convoys are supposed to be limited to twelve cars. Any more puts you in a grey area of the law.
It was all sparked of by the Gorge Rumble held on 21st April last year; 33 TVRs in convoy. Check out Event Reports under www.tvrcc-bristol.co.uk and the feature in Sprint.
The worry was that the Sprint feature could be used as evidence against us if somebody were to complain and take us to task.
Apparently, the Porsche Owners Club mag was used in support of a successful prosecution against a Porsche owner bacause it was seen to be condoning (maybe encouraging) unsafe and reckless driving.
This wasn't quite the same as the convoy issue; but there is no doubt that Sprint shows us breaching the convoy limits and it has been a little worrisome....
It looks like we have got away with it. Probably because the event was a sociable gathering and not a blast through the countryside. The route avoided areas likely to cause congestion and we recieved no complaints.
This year we are going to do things a little differently and souldn't fall foul of any legal technicalities. Finger crossed.

Well I still fancy it. No road racing, timing or anything like that. I know some of these runs have got naughty in the past-maybe just keeping it to Boxsters will limit the numbers? Much over 10 cars becomes a procession anyway.
This seems to be a good forum, I didnt know it was here until recently although I've looked at the Piston heads main site for a few years. Dont want to do anything to tick off the owners of this site at all but if we can sort out a date and give indications of whose willing to come we can take it from there??

Go for it
Just remember to mention it to PetrolTed if you are arranging it on the pages of these forums, ie here or Events/Meetings forum.
If you ask others to contact you and moot a time and a place, then you can arrange it off list without any problem.
Remember that you can go to the Member's Directory or search by car type. This lets you email people directly and is a good way of drumming up a few ditherers!

rubystone said: ....and when organising a gathering don't forget to offer an alternative route as well...then you don't have to worry about limiting it to 12 cars either ISTR
I don't see any problem at all if you set off at lets say 10 mins. intervals in groups of max. 12 cars.
That would be the way to get round it.
The way the interest is shaping up for this I'd be surprised if 12 cars turned up! I've tried asking this on www.boxa.net a few times but there doesnt seem to be enormous interest.
to repeat-if interested in doing a meet and drive (not a race/convoy/sprint etc) then post on this thread, other wise on the above boxa.net thread.
When I ran ELises these runs were common (especially in good weather) but the Boxster crowd seems typically more interested in polishing and what options they have!!.........prove me wrong!!!! Sooner the better-only a few replies here thus far.....

Well unless its raining OR very wet under tyre Im going to do this run on Sunday coming leaving 9am ish. No problem with any kind of Porsche coming along, initially I wasnt sure how much interest there would be and 12cars+ is a headache (procession)
So 911, 928 what whatever, post if you can make Sunday and we'll see how many are interested......
