Calling Henry and all other experts
Discussion
Hi Henry, and of course all others tuning in.
I currently live in Hong Kong and am in the market for a 964 cab. Here is an example of one I am interested in: www.adpost.com/hk/vehicles/1394/
It's currently for sale at GBP 11.5k (at today's FX rates) and is a fairly typical example of what is available, there are currently 5 for sale and this falls pretty much in the mid price range, they vary 1k either way.
Comparing to cars similar cars in the autotrader, although no tips are available for direct comparison, I think this car would be worth around 16k in the UK if it were a genuine UK car. (I have no idea what effect a personal imports has to the value of a car, I am assuming it will reduce it's value slightly.)
In your opinion, if this car were imported to the UK, would it be worth more than the price it is currently for sale at?
I am hoping that I might be able to bring the car back to the UK with me when I return in a couple of years, keep it for a year to avoid duty and sell it to cover, or at least offset the cost of purchase and servicing for those 3 years.
Do you think it would command a price near the 16k as I am thinking it could?
thanks all
Pete

Hello Pete,
I am also living in Hong Kong and a neighbour of mine is selling a really nice 1997 993 (ruby red one on asia expat) He will return to UK in 9 months and considered to take it back, but he said all in all the cost would be around GBP 5,000. I am no expert but I think you would struggle to ship it back and make a profit, you may not even break even, but you could enjoy a few years of open top Porsche motoring in HK and sell it before you leave...... why not. You could also pick me up in it and take me for a cruise to Stanley and a cold beer as well!!!!

C'mon guys, considering how many experts there are on here with opinions on prety much everything
one of you must have an idea what this would be worth? What would you be willing to pay for it? trade or private.
one of you must have an idea what this would be worth? What would you be willing to pay for it? trade or private.Valuing cars is always very difficult as there's about a 5k spread on 964s because of condition/inspection; even if it looks nice it may need something doing.
The trade are bidding low for 964s because of age/mechanical concerns and it's basically a classic car now; top money only for collectable ones with the dogs being up for half... I think dealers know that with 996s for 20k, why will an average punter spend mid teens for a 964?
I'd say a nice RHD 964 cab could fetch 16k privately if it's particularly good, but they're not as favoured as coupes. Trade would probably bid 12-13k. I'm not sure you'd ever make money importing it, the provenance may actually deter some buyers, but you should be able to cover costs.
Thanks very much guys for your input, it really is appreciated.
Just incase you are curious, the shipping back to the UK won't cost anything as I will have a half empty container going back with all my furniture anyway, so the car can just go in there. (company pays for that as part of my deal)
Doomster - Interesting comments about 996s being at 20s and why would anyone want to pay mid teens for a 964 and I can see your point. But looking in the classifieds (on this site especially) with the exception of a few, 964s are pretty much ALL at mid to high teens. Is this peopole wanting top dealer prices for their private sale cars without the hope of getting an bid anywhere near their offer price?
Kev - I live in Stanley anyway my friend, so picking you up to come out here for a pint is no problem at all and would be my pleasure (are you out by Teun Meun) Email me and we can meet up for a beer after work! (address on profile)
So following your opinions, and my own thoughts, I certainly don't think I'll loose money on the car, just normal running costs. - I think I might be getting a new car soon!
