Hi
I'm just about to buy my first Boxter and am finding it really difficult to get even a quote from insurers as many are saying they will not insure anyone who doesn't have 12 months Porsche driving experience.

Does anyone know the best firms to try for reasonable priced insurance ?
I am going to be using this as my main car (20k miles pa) and have 9 years no claims

Cheers
Caz

try Aplan, I had my first year insured with barclays (was my first car too so no NCB) but when they sent the reknewal it was 60% more than the year before, they said somthing to do with new underwriters or somthing.

anyways, Aplan, told em what price I wanted to get near and they came back to me and knocked 50 quid of the nearest best.

What a load of ballcocks! What bloody company was that??! These insurance companies really are getting up themselves!

I insure my Boxster S with Direct Line. Because I also have my home insurance and Focus insured with them, you get loads of discounts. Im 33, have 6 years NCD and had a premium just over £500. And that's parking in Central Edinburgh.

Shop around and stay away from the idiots of the insurance industry!

Last time I got Elephant/Admiral etc (all the same group) to do a quote there were two problems. First one was that the quote they give you is for a standard car with no options...once you start adding options, the quote goes just as high or worse than all the other companies. Second and most important for a new car purchase....they don't give you another new replacement in the first year if it gets written off. So you get the trade value. Particularly bad if it happens in the first few weeks/months....imagine something happening to it a few days in and then being given 20% less than you've just paid! Nightmare.

Do you know if they still do this?

I'm with elephant on both the GT3 & Range Rover Sport. No real problems with either. Accepted the GT3 after a few checks, for some reason an 03 GT3 didn't exist according to them! RRS also no problem, but they did add £20 to the premium for having privacy glass & 20" alloys. They were miles cheaper than anyone else for the GT3 and mirrored my NCB to the RRS. Heard bad tales of them upping premiums big time on 1st renewal so fingers crossed for next month. The problem of not replacing a written off car with a new one is not unique to elephant, I think a lot of insurers will take the same approach

I have been with Privilege for a long time now, they were one of the few who would insure me on my first 993 (i was 24 you see).

Last year, for fully comp including business use for my 993tt they charged me £1030 - 9 years NCB, 29 years old, unlimited mileage, garaged.

Have you tried confused.com? I always start there just to get an idea...

I've posted this before but probably relevant again:

Try Cheam Insurance Brokers (totally independent) for a free quote.

Had to shop around loads when I got my 997. Under 30, central London postcode, car on the street, zero no claims, etc etc and Cheam got me the best deal through CHUBB. Specialist policy with tons of benefits for high end car drivers:

- Insurance covers actual value of car (I write it off in 6 months, I get full money back and not just market value) so no need for gap insurance
- Car is fully comp for anyone to drive
- I'm fully comp to drive any other car (incl. rental and courtesy cars)
- Guaranteed equivalent courtesy car in case of repairs (had my car resprayed after a small incident and got an AMV8 for two weeks..!!)
- Free legal protection (you need to sue for loss of earnings, etc all your legal bills are already paid)
- All repairs through OPC

I'll admit it wasn't cheap for me but that was due my circumstances - give them a call and see what quote you get.

One major word of caution that you should be very careful with. Admiral, Sainsbury's etc ended up giving me cheaper quotes than I currently have but decided against them due to the last item on my list. In case you have an accident in your Porsche, most 'normal' insurance companies don't have to approve repairs through OPC and have the right to have your car repaired at their own recommended garages. That means your pride and joy may end up being repaired at some cheap independent without you having any control. Makes a huge difference to resale values (esp. for new cars) and OPC can question your warranty for any further claims. Be careful and make sure what ever policy you go for specifically allows you to have any repairs done at OPC or at a garage of your choice (not the insurance company's)... Read the small print and don't just go for the smallest number..!!!

They did this to me...

Plus they have been really crap with changing vehicle details. I went from a group 17 car, worth £15,000 to a Group 16 car worth £1500. They reduced the premium by £35...

When I rang them for a quote on another group 17 car, worth about £15,000, they wanted to increase the premium by £750!!! Also, they seem very wooden in their customer service. ie; you can't discuss an individual situation with an underwriter to get a reasonable premium.

I haven't had an accident in 5 years, and ended up paying £650 a year to insure a poxy mondeo

Roll on september when I can have access across the board of classic insurance policies

Funnily enough I had no problems talking to them on the premium 1st time round. But £650 for a Mondeo , I'm barely more than that on the GT3

Try Norwich Union Private Car Club. I use them for my Cayman and they are great. No need for a tracker and flipping reasonable!! Living in London, 28 years of age, 5 yrs no claims and looking around the £850 mark. Shweet.....

I use Elephant for insuring my 996 and I'm 22 - cheapest quote by far, they didn't care about the tracker in the car either (and after my nightmare with the Tracker co I've had it switched it off)

Try www.confused.com for getting a quote
