OK OK......I haven't lost it (I hope) but I was at the North East motorshow the other day (which was crap) and I rather enjoyed looking at the motorhomes there. Sad or what?

I was thinking......quite fancy one for weekends away doing outdoor stuff. However, I know that 1 or 2 911 owning PHers have a motorhome to tow their P&J, and I might fancy doing the same (saves on hotel costs for us norhterners that always go to track days the night before).

Melv has one and so does Burzel (or whatever Paul calls himself these days!!). One is small and perfectly formed, the other a bit of a gin palace!!

I was wondering, which motorhomes are OK to tow with? Do you need a big one (fnar fnar)? Do you need at least a 2.8 TD engine? (I aint getting a yank 5 litre petrol gas guzzler). Rearwheel drive needed? Can you get tow bars on all of them? Where's the best place to buy one?

Am I nuts?

www.moranmotorhomes.co.uk/ are the people to speak to. Roger and Scott both compete in the British Hillclimb championship, and supply motohomes to a number of other racers who tow car trailers with them.

Christ.

Buy an e39 530d for 10 grand and a trailer. then you can get rid of that ford and panzer about in a bit of comfort. There you go, saved you £20k instead of forking out £30k on a caravan on wheels...... that should pay for a few nights in a nice hotel.

He'll never do it,
relax.

on the serious side though,
my mate used to rent himself out with a JCB, to which he hooked up his hilux via an A' frame,
perhaps needless to mention the fact, it overtook him going downhill and crashed into a little humpback bridge, much to his consternation

Thanks mate, exactly what I was after.

Our plan is to hire one and go on holiday in it, see if we like it etc.

I think a motorhome is a great pit and paddock buddy for those who tow their track cars. You can make a brew any time you like!! Should be enough room in the back of one for one's slicks and nitrogen for the airjacks.

If I bought a motorhome, I would have a Stannah stairlift fitted to ease access for Vic.

You can get a Chevy Dayvan with a 5.7 litre V8... some have beds in the back but no shower. Couple of side-exit exhausts for some noise and job's a good'un

I used a Hymer 654 with a 2.5 TD intercooled engine. Towed the race car and all the gubbins at motorway speeds no problems. Sleeps six and you get that german build quality.

Cheers

Certainly I have had no problems, you almost wouldn`t know the car is on the back, even going up long hills in Belgium the old girl pulls like a train. (GM Workhorse chassis, Vortec 8.1 litre powerplant coupled to a 5 speed Allison transmision). The slideouts, air-con, genny, full sized kitchen, fridge, bathroom, beds, 27" telly (plus bedroom), DVD, VCR, central heating, etc, etc all help to take the edge of things when you arrive in the paddock as well

On a more European note the 2.8 diesel engines are fine in any of the variants (they seem to be much of a muchness). Make sure you get ABS brakes if poss. We had a Swift Suntor on a deal from Brownhills for a while and it was fine, a garage to keep tools and wheels in as well as an overcab bunk. I would struggle to go back from the American motorhomes as you just get so much for your money but size cna be a problem to some people.

Paul`s motorhome is/was a sort of half way house. A proper commercial chassis (most European motorhomes are based on van components rather than lorry), but not quite as large as the US machines and without any slideouts etc. A lovely vehicle but not cheap. Certainly you would have no problems hauling a racecar behind, he used/uses a large fully covered trailer.

Yeah our hymer had lap belts for 5 passengers in the back. Although newer motorhomes tend to have 3 point bets for at least 2.

For towing the Burster 747 seems to be the daddy due to its huge storage & twin rear axle. There always seem to be a couple in the paddock where ever we go.

Having said that the Hymer has a good truck. Check out e-bay if you want to save 4 - 8 k on dealer prices.

Cheers

Thanks Henry, very useful. Mind you, with an 8.1 litre engine, yours must make light work of towing. Is it diesel? For commercial chassis, do you need a lorry driver's license?

Paul's motorhome looked massive to me!

I have spoke to Brownhills. They have a branch near me. I have also looked at the Suntor vehicles. They look fine. Something with a garage for wheels would be best. I intend to go for a nose 'round Brownhills soon.

In a recent thread Johnny you were asked if you were still alive to which you replied " Yep alive and kicking "...well given this thread, you may well be a & k but you've certainly lost some of those marbles somewhere along the lines me reckons

you could always paint the hymer audi RS blue.....it would certainly have the attributes of the ex Agent O now Samba GT2....it would certainly be big, blue and one of a kind !...and think about all that laundry space for yours and Mrs S's smalls...puts the wing of the gt2 to shame !!
