Sorry, but I'm not sure what the normal torque convertor slip feels like. The acceleration should be smoothe through the rev range, I assume, and what I'm experiencing is a definite blip in the rise of revs.
That's why I loaded the question
All tippy cars will exibit a feeling of slip as the torque converter fully locks up. It's more noticeable if you let it pull off in second but it's definitely still there. Normal behaviour is a sensation of slip as you pull away followed by a very feint but still noticeable clunk as the torque converter locks. After that point the drive is locked and you can't detect the fluid clutch.
Just trying to work out if you are feeling normal behaviour or there is a fault.
Right, been provoking it a bit
If you use a wide throttle opening from virtually a standstill in third you can provoke a 400 RPM rev drop.
The effect can be made more or less pronounced by varying the throttle position. I would say your RPM drop is perfectly normal for a torque converter equipped car.

Has anyone experienced the following problem with a tiptronic gearbox on a 996: whilst accelerating in 2nd gear the revs drop a couple of hundred revs at exactly the same place (2200 rpm) and then continue to climb. It only ever happens in 2nd gear and always at the same revs.
I experienced the very same. JZM claimed it was air flow sensor (I think, please don't quote me). Anyway, they new exactly what I meant as soon as I described it, Cleaned the sensor and it was fine for a few weeks, now its back again.
Oddly enough I've also had a check light come on, so I took it down to RGA. The diagnostic showed that an air flow sensor was faulty, which they replaced (at a cost of £250!). The revs things is still there, but the warning light is not. Is a normal automatic gearbox a torque convertor? Because I've driven lots of automatic cars (my other car is an automatic Audi Allroad with the ability to change gears manually on the steering wheel), and I've never experienced this before.

just been out in mine & it does seem to only go into full drive mode about 2200 mark, ie the torque thing.
What if you stick it in M & then down to 1st does it still do it then?

Yes it does seem to. The same thing happens if I'm pulling away in 1st or 2nd gear, in manual mode or automatic. Hmmm.

The Porsche Tiptronic system is a 'normal' automatic gearbox, ie equipped with a torque converter as opposed to a standard clutch. Mine definitely can be coaxed into dropping a few RPM depending on how I pull off. Large throttle openings at low RPM make the drop more pronounced. Edited by Fasteddie1 on Monday 14th August 15:11
