rattle from front
Discussion
Ive got a rattle when it feels like it on my2001 boxster, checked pollen filter all suspention parts and had changed rear arms.It still exists mainly on sharp bumps sleeping policemen cats eyes and such like and not all of the time. Its like a metallic clonk, could it be brake pads worn/loose in caliper that would explain the now and then?
any thoughts
cheers paul

When i bought the the car 3 week ago it had this problem, the tech's couldn't find so rang porsche. They said it could be pollen filter, strut tops or the rear arms as this resonates thru the car.Well the arms were replaced, but alas.At the same time the MOT was done that showed nothing untoward, but its still damn annoying
and i think i've got a small case of RMS

Is it from cold or only when you've been driving for a while (15-20 minutes plus)? I've just (eventually) tracked down a mysterious clonking similar to described as a track rod end on the steering rack end. This was on a 996 by the way.

Same for me ( on a Boxster S)

And did you, like me, replace just about every bit of your suspension before finding out who the real culprit was? Three different garages gave three different diagnoses...
And now it sounds like the other side might be starting to go as well.
My 996TT needs new front suspension mounts - my car makes the sound you describe.
The other thing it could be is drop links, my old 996 C2 (which I believe shares many suspension parts to the Boxster) again made a very similar sound to what you describe.
Get both these checked.
The upside is that both of these are not wallet busting to get sorted, however if its the suspension mounts then that needs doing then a full geometry alignment needs doing afterwards, so the labour charge on the whole job runs into 6+ hours.

I have had my Boxster S (2001 model) for 3 weeks now and although mine has already been a pain (and a joy) I havent experienced any clunking sounds. Worryingly I often listen to my stereo too loud so probably wouldnt hear them anyway, think I am gonna start turning the volume down!
Dont want to go too much off the topic (cus no doubt its a worry for ya) but what are the tell tale signs of (sorry for this) the RMS problem? I think I read somewhere about look for oil on the drive (any leaking) after your car has been there a while. I have been doing this and no sign yet....hope I dont get hit by that. Apologies to all old sweats for newbie RMS mention!

Oh yes - three trips to the OPC (under warranty!) and, ultimately, almost complete replacement of the front suspension...!

Good that yours was covered by the warranty, my extended warranty wouldn't cover the work as they are considered wear and tear items though no one has ever heard of them going at 50k before (supposedly).
