Having bashed my hands against my knees all the way round Brands GP last Thursday, I'm in the market for a smaller diameter steering wheel for my 993.

Clubsport Paul kindly pointed out that the standard 996 airbag wheel is smaller, a great shape and a direct replacement (cheers mate). So off I go to t'internets and check out new prices. There are 2 wheels available from Carnewal - a standard one, which with airbag module comes to £524. There is also a 'fat-rimmed' wheel available which looks identical apart from a fatter rim (no shit, sherlock) - £796 with airbag module.

Given the size of the prices - does anyone think a wheel from a breaker or second hand is a good idea? I will be going for an airbagged wheel so obviously won't buy one from a crashed car where the airbag has activated.

Also - does anyone here have the fat-boy steering wheel? I prefer fat rims (ooerr) but I'm not sure it's a good investment of £250 (it'd probably be better put towards some new suspension).

Anyone got opinions on this?

Be careful with the fat rim - my old e46 M3 had a fairly thick rim. I found it a bit too thick (not now Vixpy!) and my hands aren't exactly small.

Welll.... that was the original question, whether it was wise to go for a second-hand one or not. Safety issues and all that.

But hell, it wasn't an interesting question anyway, so I may as well let you fellows get back to your banter.

Why not get a 2nd hand one/?? I would have it fitted by a specialist,,hopefully someone who has fitted one before and may know any pitfalls or problems with buying second hand, as in liklihood of going off during fitment????

I assume the ebay ones are not from crashed cars???!

done this before on a scooby, its a 5 minute job. you just need to discharge the car for an our or two so that any charge remaining to set off the bag dissipates.

Cyber, I have a 996 3 spoke in my 993 - love it! One small point though, it looks smaller than the 4 spoke original, but is actually the same size. It's a worthwhile mod as it feels alot better than the original IMO.
I bought a new one and fitted it myself in 15 minutes.

You could always fit the RS steering wheel which is a big improvement, although no airbag.

I have a standard 996 wheel for sale if you are interested as I swopped mine for the fat one.

PM me if you are interested.

When I bought my 996 took the standard 4 spoke wheel off and replaced it with a 3 spoke airbagged. Cost £600ish plus £25 for my local independent to fit the new one, as apparently you need a special tool.
Sold the 4 spoke on eBay last week for only £40. Low I know but better than it sitting around in the garage.
Have looked at the Porsche s/wheels on eBay but a lot of them seem to be ridiculously priced for second hand, especially the ones from the Los Angeles breaker!

I'd appreciate your views on the fat rim wheel - I was considering getting one. Is it the same diameter as the standard wheel, just with a fat rim? How thick is the rim, is it comfortable to use?

I've thought about putting a 996 wheel on my 993 but I have concerns over the compatability of the airbag. I know that it connects OK and you don't get a warning light but does anyone know if the 996 type wheel was available as an official option or dealer retrofit on the 993?

Cheers.
