I posted this in the PCGB forums, but I thought I'd cross post it here for some less polite comment ;-)

Hi folks,

I've had my lovely vesuvius (vesuvio??) 2S for a couple of months now and still have a front end full of flies and a big grin.

Couple of Qs now I'm getting used to it so see if I need worry, or if "they all do that, sir".

* Judder at 100+
Car & wheel feels dead stable until 100 passed then a fairly strong judder through the wheel, getting worse as I accelerate. It had new front disks & pads at the dealer before I picked it up and the front tyres are relatively new. What else can I investigate ?

* Diff noise ?
At < 30 I can hear a reasonably agricultural whine/rumble. Am assuming diff. Is this normal to some extent (I know it's difficult to judge without hearing it !)

* 30 is a pain. Boy does this car hate mooching along at 30. Used to big engined cars, so may be trying to keep it in too high a gear, but a 2k revs it hunts and shunts a bit.

* Warm starting. After a long, hot run, it doesn't particularly like starting - seems very sluggish to pick up. Left for an hour it starts beautifully again.

Thanks for any input folks. It's in for a service in a month at AutoStrasse so some idea of what's a concern and what isn't may be useful.

Hi,

I can possibly help with a couple of Q's

Diff Noise
If you are running Pzero Assymetricos, they tend to rumble hideously in exactly the way you have described at low speeds when they have about 40% of their life left. I thought I had a bearing away to start with. New tyres no noise...

Warm Starting
This has been an issue for me when I have used ordinary 95RON unleaded rather than 98. If you empty the tank and brim it with Optimax then disconnect the battery negative terminal for 20 mins, reconnect it and restart the engine and let it idle for about 10 mins you may find this improves matters as the ECU relearns for the new fuel. AFAIK the ECU retards its curves for crap fuel to protect the engine but doesn't necessarily go back the other way when things improve.
This may help with the low speed hunting too.

Others here should be able to help with the other stuff.

KR,

Neil,
I've now sold my 993C4 (which I had for 5 years) in readiness for my 997GT3.
None of the problems you mention were apparent on mine so I can only deduct that they are small problems with your car which can be diagnosed and fixed.

Regarding the hunting at 30mph, try cleaning the idle control valve, easy to do and fixed mine. See the p-car diy site for more info.

Had a 80miles all cross country dash in my c2 last night, no speed cameras on route to. The 993 really is a fantastic car, so much character and feedback.

Re the vibration in the steering wheel at speed, get a FULL geometry check at somewhere like JZM. It is pricey, but well worth it on 993's. It will make a world of difference, and I would put good money on it fixing the problem.

The 993 2wd n/a cars really are fantastic. Having owned both a C2 and Turbo4, I can honestly say I preferred my C2!!!! More character and feeling.

The front wishbones will cause that, replace the pair and a 4 wheel alignment. Wishbones £172 each an hour or so labour and than £150 for the alignment.

Did yours idle cleanly before that ? Mine idles fine.

Agree it's a fantastic car - when mine's in it's element - fast A road, the twisties, or a motorway interchange, it's spot on and better than I ever thought it could be :-)

Sounds like worth dropping it in to Maztech, mebbe get the front wishbones inspected/changed if necessary, then full alignment/geometry check is worth doing.

I have, however, found handling to be absolutely impeccable in all other conditions, and it does what I expect, although my main comparison points are an Elise - the porker is the only thing I've driven that feels better than an Elise through the twisties, and an M Coupe which the 993 makes feel very basic and wooden.

The best way I can describe the handling is that it feels like a grown-up Elise.

Tyre wear also look dead even.

Would you expect that if the Geom was out ?

Might sound a bit strange but I have a full Beissbarth alignment done by Tognola engineering every year before I go to the Ring and it is always spot on and my tyre wear has never been even.

I tend to annihilate the inner inch or so of the tyres after 4000 to 6000 miles although the rest always looks fine.

I hope this is normal...

PS I needed wishbones after 59K miles

Good luck with the other stuff.

Yes, idled perfected before and after. Do a search on rennlist and all will be revealed..

Hmmm, are you setting it to factory alignment specs or something more agressive? My C2 wears all four evenly.

As far as I know it is set up at factory spec including tyre pressures and whilst my own driving is fairly pedestrian, those who know their onions have complimented the car as one of the best handling 4S they have tried.

Perhaps the 4WD, wide body and turbo running gear makes a difference to the tyre wear patterns?
