I'm in the process of selling my 996 at the moment and was planning on buying an M3 CSL to replace it with.

And then I went and saw a CSL. And went Guildford Porsche afterwards. And now I need to stay with Porsche.

So I either buy a newer 996 (seems pointless though) or I go for gold and bankrupt myself with a 997 S.

There is another option too. A Cayman seems the perfect solution, but is this acceptable? Would I be bored in a month and kicking myself for not going for a 997? Will they depreciate shockingly? Is it even legal for men to buy them? Argghhh!! help.

9972S without a doubt ...... UNLESS

... TT?

You wouldn't need bankrupt yourself to quite the same degree.

I hope to be in your position in 1-2 years time and it's picking between the above that's going to be a bloody nightmare .. I can't wait!!

The TT would be another great option but for one thing. I just find them so ugly! I know I'm almost certainly alone thinking this but to me it looks fat, heavy and lazy - now if it were the 997TT things would be very different

What is it you want, Carrera? An everyday great and practical driving Porsche and money left in your pocket, or ultimate status and broke?

Ok, bankruptcy was a joke really - £60k just sounds so much money for a car - I can't really get comfortable with the idea.

I assume your post was referring to the Cayman as being great and practical? I need to test drive one I think to make my mind up - what are your views on the drive?

i have a 996 tt and my bestmate has a csl and i have to say the csl is a great car and my mate loves it but he lives beside work so doesnt drive to work hense he only drives at weekends, he finds it a great car but if your goin to drive it everyday i think you may not enjoy it as much as a porsche as the csl is a more track car than an everyday car the porsche you can drive any day any condition and enjoy it the csl is the gt3 of bmw so if your leaving a gt3 it may bring you what you want but if ur getting out of a c2 or c4 dont look at it.

Well then ... It makes things a lot easier for you!! ..
My opinion (for what it's worth) would be a '05 2S with low mileage and all the spec you need , and the hit of the first years depreciation hoovered out of someone elses wallet.

I'm torn between them.

A nice 04 2S for 50-55k with 25-30ks worth of depreciation already taken OR a £40-45k Cayman thats technically cheaper to buy but economically more expense to own as it's still so close to it's new price.

Hmmmmm.

laugh I bet someone has already called an OPC enquiring as to when the "soft top" version will be released.

Reminds me of a situation years ago in a local motor factors. Chap walks in and asks the spotty prat behind the desk for a price of a torque converter for a 3.0 litre Capri "is that manual or automatic Sir" asks the spotty prat hehe

You MUST get a 997C2S... I saw a Cayman today, parked up. It looked good but they do remind me of an Audi TT thats been doing lots of cardio.. Good luck either way.

I think, think, I'm back on the CSL. Got to get it out of my system.

I'd rather a C2s, obvioulsy, but for a 25-30k difference I think I can wait a year.

I think.

ETA: I do like the Cayman but I think I've ruined myself by having a 996, although it really wouldn't be a step back, it would feel like it. I think.

Or buy one privately that's 10 months old and miss out on the dealer margins. Check my profile, hint hint

Dave,

The best advice is to go test a CSL and Cayman back-to-back - see which you prefer to drive.

as yex says, you could pick up one outside of the dealer network cheaper, and it'll still have an OPC warranty - but yes, you'll take a hit on depreciation you wont on the CSL..

and then in 12 months, you should be able to pick up a nice 997C2s used
