GT3 engine life - prior to rebuild
Discussion
Serious question. What is the collective opinion on how long a GT3 engine will last prior to a rebuild having seen a lot of track action?
Apparantly the mk1s have a different oil pump arrangement to the mk11s, hence why recently started Mk1 cars can sometimes be heard clattering their bottom ends down pitlanes. I am curious as I may be in the market and don't immediately want a £10k rebuild.

Why not ring JZM and have a chat with Steve to see what he thinks. I think only a place that works on the cars will have a clear picture. Parr or Manthey may also have opinions they will share.
I suspect you'll otherwise get the same answers on here that you got last time you asked about this

Get a Porsche used car warranty. £725. Problem solved.
PS - why buy a car that's seen lots of track action when there are pampered low mileage cars for sale?
Either way get a warranty.
I asked this and didn't really get a definitive answer either.
While I have heard of a number going pop to be fair it's usually been put down to driver error and the general consensus is they are very robust.
However the earlier cars won't have the luxury of an OPC warranty for much longer. New engines are close to the purchase price of the earlier cars and I haven’t been able to ascertain how much a rebuild would cost

thats right, they only warranty up to 9 years.
My car was 7 in march, so Ive got less than 2 years possible with an official warranty.
What about the independants?
How about Paragon's warranty? They charge about £1k for a two year warranty aslong as you get the car serviced by them. Has anyone had to claim from them for a rebuild?

Any engine is as good as you treat it. If it has a regular oil change and isnt buzzed - ie have many rev range 2 incidents, a GT3 engine is good for 100's of miles. I know of one very famous super cup driver who had his engine stripped after a season a few years back and there was so little wear that it was rebuilt using the same main bearings. it also dynod more power at the end of the season. Incredible for a racing engine.

This clattering you mention on a mk1 after start up ? - is that normal or something to be worried about ?

Sounds like a death rattle but it is normal, it takes a little time for oil to circulate to the cam tensioners. It's just the chains rattling, no problem at all.

Mine seems to make a different sound every time it starts. Accrding to OPC the engines have some idiosyncratic tendencies (what ever they are)that can make them sound wierd but I understand they are amazingly robust. OPC Swindon are only aware of one of the Mark 1's ever having had an engine change and that was due to serious abuse.

Thanks Steve - my mind is now at rest !
Mine only does it when it has been stood a week or so - did wonder about looking into some way of getting oil presure up before start up but if it's normal and harmless I will leave well alone

Steve, surely you meant 1000's?
Do independant's (i.e. non OPC) carry diagnostics able to check rev range 2 logs?
