My 1990 964 C4 needs to have its' first, and hopefully only, small patch of rust (I don't have a garage - boo hoo), repaired. The area affected is just below the windscreen and between the wiper mounts.

Firstly can anybody tell me if this area is prone to rust on 964's, and can anyone recommend somewhere in Sussex that would do a good job.

Secondly as it is Guards Red the paint could do with sprucing up; will a machine polish be adequate or should I bite the bullit and go for a full / part respray? Either way where can I get a decent quote from?

Muchas gracias amigos.

Yes its prone to going, mainly due to ham fisted window fitters using cheese wire!

Easy repair though, and yes the paint should polish up.

Don't mean to worry you, but the rear screen area is also a weak point.
Its not all bad though. A little rust is understandable after 10 years+ and once fixed professionally should last for years.

Cheers guys.

Back screen appears ok at present so no worries there - yet!

Got any ideas on approx costs though as nearest OPC pointed me towards their repairer of choice who came back with £450 (plus vat) - ouch, (though it would be covered by lifetime guarantee).

Anyone had a bad experiance with insurance backed windscreen fitters, or will they be ok?

Try to talk to the fitter before the work. Porsche have a special way of fitting the screens with 'bonding' (glue). It can be a problem removing the old stuff so your paintshop needs to make good thoroughly. Then the fitter needs to fit it properly to seal it and stop it moving. (The rubber surround is also a bugger to get right!) Make sure the fitter has experience of 911's or don't use them.

Two suggestions which may be helpful.

First, for care of the bodywork, I would recommend Specialised Paintwork, just round the corner from Porsche Reading HQ (jn 13 M4). I have used them for my 911 Club Sport to have a small rust spot removed from the rear bumper, and their work is excellent. They know 911s - the guy who runs it used to work for Porsche directly for paintwork correction. I realise this is not Sussex, but I'd say they are worth a call. www.specialisedpaintwork.com/home.htm

For generally sprucing up your paintwork I would definitely try a paint detailer first before respraying. I would recommend Paul Dalton of Miracle Detail without hesitation - he can look over your car, and show you what can be done on one panel if you like. He is able to renew paintwork by removing one or two microns of paint / clearcoat, eliminating swirl marks and paint which has become contaminated and will then add high quality waxes and treatments to protect the paint.

Cost is around £750 for his top level detail, but that's a lot less than a respray.

Hope this helps.
