I'm running my 993 with the aircon on most of the time at the moment. And surprisingly the aircon works pretty well, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

However, when I switch the aircon off, and run the heater it smells horrible. Bit like a damp mouldy old cellar or sweaty socks or something like that if you can imagine it.

I can get rid of the pong by whacking the heater up to full and opening the windows, and then quite quickly it disappears and is fine. Then I can close the windows turn the heater down to a comfortable level and everything is okay. Until next time I switch from aircon to heater.

Any ideas?

most cars do this. Whack a can of the air con deodoriser in it and the problem will mostly go. Also turn the air con off but leave the fan running on the last 5/10 mins of your journey.

Yes, this works on mine.

Ah so that's what my Defender has in common with a 911. I've got a wiff of old dog too but I think that was an optional extra.

Same here on my 996. Was talking to my Dad about it at the weekend and he'd read something in the Torygraph Motoring section about it as a common fault (he'd had it in his Audi too) and it's to do with the pollen filter getting damp. As above, the recommendation was a blast with the heater once a week (year round) and certainly helped mine when I tried it.
