Hello
I feel I have to try and preach to the unconverted (risking wrath and hell fury)
I too was like you, revelling in Tuetonic efficiency, enjoying faultless build quality and ability.
Still though, I felt there was something missing.
A nagging doubt in the back of my mind that there was more to life than this (go on, it's there isn't it?)
Well, I found it, and it's called charisma.
Too much effieciency flattens it.
You want it too?
Well there's an easy cure. Ignore the sceptics and go with your heart. Follow me friends to a brave new world....
Noble
TVR
Lotus
Marcos
Westfield
Ultima
Ariel
Caterham
Morgan
etc etc
There are plenty of ways, just take the plunge. You won't look back...

Some nice cars in that list, can you repost a new one that includes only cars that can do the following well:
Be a one-car only tool.
Handle all weathers.
Handle only weekend use but start first time.
Be reliable and reasonable cost to maintain eg services 500 for a small to 1000 for a big.
Accommodate me, the other half, the forthcoming baby and a bunch of luggage.
Offer a warranty scheme at around 700-800 per year once the factory one expires.
Thanks

At last, some sane respite from the madness of porsche domination. Take a drive in almost all of those vehicles and you'll escape the starched and over clinical environment of the 911 and experience something called 'driving'.
Of course some years ago a 911 had to be driven but sadly the skills of controlling a 911 have been replaced with basic windows technology and I've had to go out and buy a car!

Excuse me, did you drop this on the way in? Of course some years ago a 911 had to be driven but sadly the skills of controlling a 911 have been replaced with basic windows technology and I've had to go out and buy a car!

I can only comment on one of those: Lotus
I owned one for three years and it was on the road for probably 6 months of that.
It was not for lack of trying on my part. Spent heaps of money, time and effort on it.
I have done more kilometers (3000km) in my Porsche in the last 4 months than I did in the 3 years of owning the Lotus.
At last I can DRIVE my Porsche. Loving every km!

Perhaps, unlike some Porsche Drivers, I have had the opportunity to drive some of the cars on that list... Caterhams' Westfields etc... and I have driven them on a track. They do offer a feel unlike most modern cars - but - I refuse to accept that a Porsche has stopped being a drivers car.
I was on a mini hoon yesterday around the back-doubles of this fine country in my 997 S and this car is most definteley a driving delight.
I suggest you stop listening to TOP GEAR'esque comments about the clinical nature of a 911 etc and really drive one.
All the WINDOWS Electrickery you mention is there because the game has moved on a bit since the days of open-wheeled cars with fenders on... and it all can be de-activated with the flick of a switch.
Now stop talking cods-wallop...
Seeing as you have seem to have succumb to stereo-types for your post rather than real world experience... here are some of mine...
Do you drink Warm Ale by any chance and discuss the merits of Hornby double 0 gauge toy trains...
Promote your Tank-Top somewhere else.
I'm a bit confused...
Porsche 911 - supercar you can use everyday...
Most of the cars on that list are kits cars/stripped out track toys - not one of them could you spend an hour on the M4 without needing to call a chiropractor...
Anyway, i cant be bothered feeding the trolls - perhaps if we ignore them they will go to the TVR forums and start saying telling them they should buy Toyota's because they are more reliable...

Think you'll find there are plenty of us here who have either (1) started with one of these and swapped to Porsche relieved, or (2) swapped to 'exciting' British half-finished sportscars for the rush, only to return to Porsche once the novelty of inadequate engineering wears off.
In my case, I got tempted away by Lotus, TVR and Noble. I am now again driving a 993.
As to Ariel, Caterham, Westfield, etc. - these cars are utterly irrelevant, they do not compete with Porsche's offerings in any shape or form. Plenty of Porsche owners here have one of these types of toy as an addition, no sane person would suggest a Caterham is a valid substitute for a 911.
Fool.

I've gone the Caterham, Porsche and Lotus routes a few times, and am currently on a Lotus binge. The cars on the list have their place, as do Porsches. I don't see these things as being mutually exclusive. The Caterhams I had could do things no Porsche could. Lotus sort of take over where Caterham leaves off, whilst sacrificing a bit of pace in the process. And when I'm exhausted from the effort of driving the erstwhile British pair, Porsche is waiting with a range that delivers a fair bit of the excitement, with a lot less of the hardship. I agree that you're doing yourself no favours if you dismiss the cars on the list, but equally, if you stop yourself from trying a Porsche on the basis of prejudice, then you're being equally blinkered.
