In the end I got a red Carrera 2S, ex demo from my favorite OPC. I had seriously considered a new BMW M5 having had the last one and loved it but the Porsche is magic, especially around the bends. Power out and grin like an idiot.
The wife's gone bonkers. A new car and three months of silence, magic!

I think the 997 and Cayman look excellent in Red, go for it.
My 968 is guards red and I have never had any bad reactions to it (no more than normal anyway).
The only issue is when is starts turning pink and orange and requires lots of elbow grease.
Not that you would have such problems on a new/nearly new one.

I had a red C4s which i thought looked awesome, however i did get some shocking bids for it from OPc 's when i tried to sell it,due to the colour.'All i got was if it was silver sir'.However if fashions change it may become very popular again like the early 911's.The wife's gone bonkers. Thats the game they play. If you had a silver one they would have said 'if it was red we could give you £x more as another customer has asked them to find one'

so your colour will be more rare and maybe more valuable on trade-in!
nonsense, do those 4wd-tinted spectacles have a red filter sidicks
won't be worth a premium, you will reduce the re-sell market a fair bit but should still not lose much more value than a silver one
so at the end of the day its your car that you have to drive for x years so choose the colour you like (I would warn buyers of some colours but guards on a 9987/997 is not one of them (though curiously awful on a 986/996 IMHO)

The 997 looks stunning in red!! needs black wheels too.
IMHO the only way to go for red which still is not my colour in general (I considered a white one but eventually went for GT silver - the GT3 RS looks tasty in that orange as well).
Residuals are also influenced by the area you live. There are the silver/black-only regions, where it's almost impossible to resell any other colour. In other regions people are more open and use the full colour range.
In any case, if YOU like the colour so b*gger the other people and bloody well buy the car - but make sure it gets black wheels...

Slightly off topic but how resilient is the paint on a 997? I have opted for GT silver on my c4s, assuming that basalt black looks great new but must take a massive battering from stone chips. Then, today, I saw a black c4s out and about around Trafalgar Square - the chrome of the pse etc and the lettering just made it look stonking, which got me thinking again ...
Also have many of you gone for paint protection of any kind? Is it worth the money and hassle?

They all get a bit peppercorned on the nose cone over time. Nothing you can do about it apart from something like Armourfend which never appealed to me. Also have many of you gone for paint protection of any kind? Is it worth the money and hassle?
Dare I say it, if you can afford a 997 you can afford a couple of hundred quid to get the nose touched up in a few years time.
Go for it! I appreciate all that has been said regarding the trade's reaction to a non standard colour, and some of the reluctance to accept guards red into the mainstream again is probably the yuppie image of the 1980's
I have a seal grey car. I love the colour but it is obvious the car was spec'd by the dealer for appeal to the greatest number of buyers.
One of the courtsey cars I had a year or two ago was a red 986 boxster S. It had the 18" carrera alloys and the colour of the bodywork with the big FO red brake calipers looked fantastic.
I know you will be unlikely to get red calipers on a 997 unless it is an S but nevertheless I bet it looks fab and I certainly wouldnt be swayed by the possibility of denting future resale values. Two points spring to mind 1)you will get a trousering come trade in regardless of spec/colour etc, and 2) if the trade really dont like guards red then the price you bid now should be sufficient to offset any future loss you incur as a result of a dodgy trade-in
