993 RS bodykit - how easily removed is it?
Discussion
As some of you will recall, I'm in the market for a 993. I'm interested in verysideways' car but he's in the US at present and in any event seems to be reconsidering whether to sell or not. In the meantime, a nice-looking one has just popped up in the Classifieds:
www.pistonheads.com/sales/100123.htm
I'm not immediately taken by the rear spoiler (although I've not seen one in the metail and it may grow on me) but otherwise think the car looks like one that is worthy of consideration.
Does anyone know how easy it would be to remove the RS bodykit and whether it would leave fitting holes?
Is there much of a second hand market for this kind of bodykit and does anyone have any idea what it might be worth?
Ta!

Like I said, I haven't seen one in the metal, Jamie. I'd leave it on for a while and see whether it grew on me, if I was to buy this car. Just wondering about ease of removal in case I decided I wasn't keen on it.
I'm not really one for ostentatious bodykit but the RS one does work rather well.

Do you know if it is factory RS bodykit or a replica???? with the factory RS, basically bolts on....there are grommets/plugs that cover the bolt holes.
With replica...who knows? you may take it off to find it was fitted for a reason...maybe to hide damage (no reference to the particular car as I have never seen it) or not fitted to factory mounting points, drilling their own holes???
For prices.. www.jasmine-motorsport.co.uk have prices for new as a guide.
Off the top of my head I recently saw correct 993RS fibrglass wing for sale at £800 and side skirts for £450 a pair......obviously worth less 2nd hand and depends on condition, should not be a problem selling on though, try classifieds on PH or Ebay.
Personally I would leave the kit on, I think the small spolier RS kit really enhances the looks of the 993 rather than the slightly over the top RSR often fitted.
Aplogies for the lengthy and to the point reply, I am sure there will be plenty of beardy and horse brass comments and why you should buy a 996 instead responses to make up for it. Good luck with your search

Much obliged, CS - that's helpful
Not sure whether it's genuine or replica. I'm corresponding with the seller by e-mail so I'll ask him. One to go and have a look at either way, I think.
I'm assuming that the 996 brigade are all out in their garages mopping up pools of oil from their leaking seals but I'll await their real ale, beard and horse-brass-related comments when they've finished cleaning up this evening

I wonder what i am missing?
well, if its been sat for a while, used only at weekends etc, it could end up costing a small fortune.
these cars dont like to be sat around, milage means nowt, if they are run everyday you know your not going to spend a few grand putting it right (like I did)

Well, the wipers park to the left, but the steering wheel is on the rght ... possibly not quite right ...
Which means what, Tertius....?
EDIT: Just compared a few photos in the classifieds and I assume what Tertius is driving at is that the wipers parking to the left is indicative of a LHD car - that's certainly consistent with the pic of the Polar Silver LHD Targa in the classifieds.
The seller did say that he had bought it without service history for the first few years but had managed to reconstruct it back to 2000. I suppose this could be consistent with the car having been European in origin and then brought to the UK.
Beats me why someone would want to go to the time and presumably not inconsiderable expense o converting a LHD car to a RHD?!
I shall ask him a direct question about this and see whether he professes ignorance.

Correct: wipers park in front of the driver, in the air-cooled cars at least.
VIN number and options list (from sticker under bonnet and in service book if it were present) should help resolve this.
Mark,
In answer to your original question, yes it is very easy to remove the front splitters and spoiler. Splitters are held in place by self tapping screws on yhe underside and a nut and bolt which is located behind the plastic liner.
There is a market for them and if original usually go for several hundred pounds.
One question to ask is about the dampers, that car is sitting high which probably means still on original munroes which will need to be replaced, factor in about £1500 - 2000 to get them replaced and aligned.

Thanks 993c4
I've asked the seller whether it's apparent from what paperwork he does have whether the car has had any suspension work done in the past. I've also asked him whether he has any idea why the wiper "parks" on the left.

To confirm what 993c4 says, look on rennlist for details of wiper park mods. They do it to improve visibilty, especially looking for cones when sprinting.
Reply from the seller to my latest queries:
"Well spotted on the windscreen wipers. They did park on the wrong side when I got it and I had exactly the same thoughts. I have checked and the car was definitely supplied in the UK by a company called Parkwood in Surrey who no longer exist. I have had the wipers changed to park on the correct side now.
The shocks are still standard and I have considered changing them as the car does move around a bit when cornering. I have a contact at Bilstein (one of our customers) who quoted me about £700 for a set of shocks (although not the PSS range).
I did have an advise on the last service that the discs should be changed. I'm not really sure I agree as the reason seemed to be a build up of brake dust rather than wear. If that is the case I would get them cleaned rather than discs and pads all round. The brakes have always felt perfect to me as anyway."
I guess that explains the wipers issue, but not really whether it's a UK spec car. I suppose I may have to go and see it and have a look at the spec code for myself.
How pressing an issue would replacement of the shocks be? I know they would need doing in the mid- to long-term but I'm probably going to struggle to find another £1.5-2K immediately on top of the purchase price, insurance et al.
Anyone have any thoughts on the discs issue? I shall do a search to see what the likely cost of replacement is.

Sounds fair to me,,,go and see the car..if you like it and feel you would be happy owning it, take it for an independent inspection....then make a decision if you think the price is fair...you will at least learn more from this.
Pre inspection the asking price is certainly reasonable, and reflects the possibility that you may have to consider changing servive items such as brakes and shocks at some point in the future.
Ref the rear spoiler it mentions in the ad it is alloy.........that would be fantastic and no doubt cost £000's to produce.....the factory RS ones are fibre glass and reasonably ripple free....some of the cheaper after market ones are not so well finished and can look like something made in a kids papier mache class.
