Why does an otherwise exemplary magazine employ someone to write damning copy on a respectable car? Is it a question of "any publicity is good publicity"? The latest edition publishes an article under the heading "OPEN question - Nik Bruce asks, just what is the point of the 911 Targa". He then goes on to slate the model, which in itself he's entitled to do. BUT......if you were a decent, law-abiding citizen who owned a Targa, would you be happy to be lumped in with Nik Bruce's alleged community of "extroverts and exhibitionists" - a buyer that he implies to be "into the occasional spot of dogging"?!?

I'm happy to accept that everyone has a right to his own opinion, but I can't see why a magazine like Total 911 should give the floor to someone who makes such derogatory remarks about the kind of people who buy a particular model. Slate the model if you will - it is obviously not everyone's cup of tea - but leave the buyers out of it!

And if, like me, you had found your Polar silver, light grey interior 993 Targa attracting by far the biggest number of interested visitors in a line-up of over 30 standard C2 coupes at a PCGB Festival - as I did at last year's trip to Brands Hatch (and there was no 'dogging' going on!) - you might wonder why Nik Bruce thinks he's so 'on-message' with his nasty remarks!

Total 911 needs to be thinking, "Just what is the point of Nik Bruce?" In my opinion, he's the equivalent of a troll on an internet forum, and as such, a pain in the proverbial....

Bah - don't rise to it.

I have a Gayman / Coxster / Boxster Coupe FFS. Love it, couldn't give a sh*t about reviews or other's opinions!

Also when you meet some of these journos you realise that a lot of them are oiky dweebs who always had trouble getting girls, never got picked for teams at school, lived with their Mum until 42, are still Star Trek fans and spend their weekends playing online games with their virtual "mates".

Some of them that is, not all.

I've not read this issue yet - as it hasn't arrived, so I'm not in a position to comment on this particular piece. However, opinion columns, in general, should be there to stimulate debate and are often wrtten with a large dollop of tongue-in-cheek. FOr instance, I doubt if Nik is seriously suggesting that there is a statistical link between targa ownership and dogging!! (whaterver that is!)

If you examine a vast array of opinion columns in various mags, you may find that many of them contain controversial content - JC for instance will irrationally slate any number of cars, towns, countries etc. This is pretty common practice for opinion columns. To be frank, opinions columns which said 'all 911s are awesome' would be a tad dull.

In closing though, we appreciate the feedback from you guys - its good to know what pisses you off or floats your boat.

I'd just like to emphasise that the point I was making was about the 'ad hominem' attitude in Bruce's article and not a whinge about his attack on Targa models. The latter is a matter of opinion and one he's entitled to make, just as JC is entitled to slate "Coxsters" etc. What riles me is the attack on the buyers of such cars, which is completely uncalled for.

JF may be right in saying that such articles are written "tongue in cheek" and intended to stimulate debate. I'll happily debate the qualities of the Targa, but I'm damned if I'm going to enter a debate on the premise of my latent exhibitionism and preference for public displays of my sexual prowess! (At my age, it's hardly relevant! )

i think the real question, the question we all want to know the answer to is 'when are you going to publish the excellent article that nervy spent ages writing for you?'. its on the lips of the nation. the question that is, not the subject of the article.

I subscribed for the first year to Total 911 using the special offer through PH, but really couldn't be bothered to renew.

I read lots of car mags (My name is Paul Dishman and I am addicted to car magazines etc), I love Porsches and own a 911 so you'd think that Total 911 would really float my boat- but it doesn't and I'm having difficulty defining why.

Part of it is that the 911RS review last year was full of mistakes as
Paul Mclean pointed out on this forum and AFAIK this was never acknowledged. Certainly the columnists aren't as good as the opposition and I don't know that I'm mega interested in modified 911s from Australia. The whole magazine seems a bit "thin" and contrived somehow.

funny you should say that, i know of loads of people, literally money in hand, waiting to buy it too. i hear the article was a veritable tour de force, hilarious too.

plus all the PH interest would be a lovely bonus to the good folks at total911, would probably bring a few back to the fold too. its just that good, practically a tonic.

you know, all in my humble opinion, like.

perhaps you could take on a new, fresh reporter to revitalise and rejuvinate the magazine john? i bet if you asked around, somebody witty, handsome, lyrical, fragrant even, could be found just like that >snaps fingers dramatically<

i bet paul would come back for that, wouldnt you Paul?

This isn't a novel aspect of T911. Previously a car has been featured with the intro focusing on writing wives' details and telephone numbers on toilet walls and watching other man sh@gging them. This reeks of more ego than talent being let off the leash too often. As for management's "no comment as not read yet" immediately followed by excuses for bilge on the basis that it "stimulates debate", that's feeble - more quality assurance is needed to weed out the second and third rate writing BEFORE it sees print, not excuses written in a vacuum afterwards. You'd think a financial venture like this would be keen to learn a bit quicker.

Funny you should say that, my son is looking for a job having just taken his NCTJ or whatever the professional qualification is. Give Mark a job and I'll subscribe for life
