are there any independent specialists who might be a bit cheaper as i'm interested in a late 80's 3.2 911.

I can recommend Crispin Manners near Exeter. Oakland or Oaktree garage
01395 232241
Its on the Sidmouth road out from Exeter.
Crispin seems friendly, helpfull and very honest. He even came to fetch me when my alternator belt snapped on my way down to drop the car in to him.
I've had the car with him twice and I'm very happy with what he's done.
The garage looks a bit run down when you see it for the first time, but its like a museum/shrine to Porsche when you get in there.

Good luck

You did indeed, and thank you once again for recommending Crispin to me.

While we're at it - do you know any good body shops who could repair a couple of car park dings ? (feckin 4x4 careless twonks)

One of the paintless dent removal companies - Dentmaster for instance, should have a franchisee in your area - try a search on the net - the people I know won't want to travel from Essex to Devon....

Dentmaster guy took two parking dings out of the door on my 3.2 - both were on the "crown" of the curve on the door so highly visible. He also removed a really old dent from around the headlight too...

Hi,
Just used Oaktree (Crispin's garage)last month for my first UK service on an import 10 1992 968 Coupe. I live in Cornwall and there is (to my knowledge) only a single mechanic down here specialising in Porsche but as I was after a stamp from a more recognised independant I thought it was worth the trip to Exeter. Thge car needed a fair bit apart from the routine service - Aircon system rework, belt roller replacement, fault rectification with water temp warning, new front discs and pads, but £1700 still hurt! And when I got home(in dark) the RH headlight wouldn't retract - it was fine when it went in Still haven't got that sorted. He was adamant that ALL my discs and pads needed replacing, I agreed to the fronts only, and after having the rears checked since I got it back, I can't see sufficient wear to warrant changing them for a while. The comments about the look of Oaktree is spot on, but Crispin certainly knows his Porsches. For amusement, count the Porsches round the back with trees growing through them I guess if I gave any constructive comment it would be make sure you agree very carefully with Crispin the limits of what you want want done on your car before you leave it there. He's a bit of a perfectionist to boot, so good for your car, but not your wallet.

My 911 went to see Crispin at Oak Tree last year prior to my Le Mans pilgrimage. There was a list of stuff I had been planning to do for ages, including getting the car properly sorted ready for some hillclimbing. Crispin has lots of experience preparing cars for racing so he really knows his stuff. I agree with the last comment about being clear on what work should be done in advance, as he went ahead and made the car handle like a dream, but it ended up costing more than I expected. The only other comment is that the work may end up taking longer than estimated, so don't leave it till the last minute if you're going away!
