At Donny today my 996 GT2 blew off the pipe at the bottom of the intercooler, drivers side.

Has this happened to anyone with either a GT2 or Turbo ?

Any tips to stop a re-occurence, a friendly mechanic put the pipe back on and suggested that the air was particularly dense and humid and it probably blew off as a safety measure to protect the other parts.

Boost is normally around 0.8/0.9 but i did notice 1.0 flash up a couple of times.

Any ideas?

Had the same thing happen on my 993TT a while back. Apparently it is not uncomon, consensus seems to be to make sure the mating surfaces are clean, free from oil, before tightening.

This is normally caused by driving your car round the track sideways !

But on a serious note, this has happened to my 993 turbo, I understand from Ace Parts that it is a common problem. Make sure you are using the Porsche jubilee clips, they are wider than normal ones. You may have to change your pipes.

The alternative of course is to buy a GT3.

Can happen, the clips are not great!

Replace with some Samco hoses, they are bringing out boost hoses for Turbo in next few weeks, call Samco and ask for Anthony, tell him I sent you!

Try Mikalor clips. They're like normal clips but tougher and wider.

One blew off my 996TT whilst changing up to sixth at 150.

Drove the car home and dropped off to the local OPC the following morning, keeping the revs below 2.5k. Even so it would stall whilst idling after 8/9 seconds. Whenever the car goes in for a service now I just ask them to check the pipes are tight.

Blew the transfer pipe off the supercharger last year. The pipe is downstream of the throttle, and with a MAP based ECU the engine pulls very nicely indeed with the pipe off thank you very much. eek

(I've set up a secondary rev limit triggered off the throttle pot so it won't be quite so scary if it happens again.)

Did nt see which car u were i was there in an older GT2 , as everyone says its not uncommon ............i have some like 'industrial' clips holding mine on............clean up before refitting and renewing the downpipes now and then , they get softened up top and bottom if they re off an on a lot, is fairly common sende but plus the 'heavy duty' clips all helps

Just seen former post .......thems my clips

Yes, this was happening all the time when engaging warps above 7.

The solution appears to have arisen following the fabrication of some aluminium pipes affixed with the congealed blood of the Valkyrie.

It has allowed further research into the theory of 'pressing on.'

The boy Andy Fearns is to blame.

Some lubricant on threads on the jubilee clips is helpful to ensure they're not binding but don't overtighten to the point where they cut into the hose. Clean and dry hose connections are the most important element.

Mr Orange i think i may have been behind you when we were tip toeing around in the appalling rain. I was in a Slate grey GT2 but there were two around.

Thanks for all the tips, i had a quick look and there are no jubilee clips at all, its sort of a snap ring thing.

Should i put a jubilee clip over the top of it ?

thanks

hi the alloy on the pipes male end become flattened its only a pressing in the casting and the snap ring becomes easy to ride over the casting, the only alternative is a new pipe i have tried to repair these with no luck, but when fitting insert the pipe then slip the clip over the top this saves damage to the the new pipe. you could poss try to run a sealed screw through both joints, but theres a good chance you will get an air leak. hope this helps simon
